Chickens are not just egglayers, They also can be loving pets, eat a lot of bugs, Eat your fallen leaves (Oh boy do my chickens love leaves!). Unless it is a rooster chickens are very quiet, quieter then most dogs even when there is a big flock. They do not travel far from home, or bit/peck people like dogs do. So overall they are Very loving pets that give you breakfast, eat all your bugs, eat leaves that have fallen from your trees (Not as much raking! YAY!) that stay very quiet and do not harm anyone or travel far from home!

Good luck on getting your chickens!

My Roo named Nuggets loves his belly rubbed, and once a bit older he will protect my hens who provide me, my wife, and 2 daughters with fresh eggs, egg a day each hen.

I def recommend 3 chickens per household. Like they have had on commercials on TV.....The Incredible Edible EGG!

Convincing people of anything, ever, is not easy IMO. But just this morning, lucky to be "on call" instead of gruelling another day of my life away at work, I was compiling a list of "famous people" who keep chickens and emailed myself the list, because I am forever compiling my six page manifesto to hand out to anybody who visits, asking "Why do you have chickens?". A few people (grossly outnumbered by happily agreeable visitors) asked rhetorically, because they actually meant to say, "Ewww, Yuck, there's chickens in your yard!". The list:

Indulging in my family's chickens helps me keep focused on the good parts of life. They're very entertaining that way. Plus, they give me links to funny little John Cleese YouTubes.

I want my children to know that eggs and food does NOT really come from Vons, Stop N Shop etc. It comes from animals, farms, etc.
