THIS is a fantastic reason (and picture!) right here. It helps teach kids environmental responsibility, sustainable growth, and where their food comes from. One of the biggest problems in the US now is obesity and sedentary lifestyles of children. One way to help prevent that is by getting them interested in something other than video games and movies. Something that gets them up, outside, and doing stuff! What better way to do that than to send them on an easter egg hunt every day?! I LOVE this picture too. it is so darling! aoxa, thanks for sharing!

Thanks!

He was so darn excited! I told him that they only laid their first egg that day because they were waiting for him to come over!

He didn't want to take the egg out at first. He was sure a chick would hatch. He said you can't eat chicken eggs because they belong to the chickens

In my neighborhood of 100 year old homes, walking home from the public library or the gradeschool across the street from me, this is what you'll see from the sidewalk in front of my house:

My property is built along berms and hills (maybe they were native mounds with tiers) so sometimes the pet chickens will appear to be eye to eye with visitors:

Sometimes our bunny hangs with the chickens, too:

I'm sending these to you photographed from my iphone today, because it is a rainy, bleak, dreary day, and I figured you could use a realistic portrayal of what things actually look like when they're NOT in photo-perfect condition

. Not bad, really. Wet and muddy, and still, they're kinda cute.

Also, if I had time and money to do it over, I just might pick out chickens for their colors and design compatability LOL! One visitor told me my place reminds her of French Country Gardens. Another told me the black chickens look "so pastoral" against the green hill, "bucolic". I think black chickens really do accent green hills nicely.

But the white chickens kinda resemble paper bags blowing around, from far away. So, I'd have to say I really would have picked out black Javas, if I had thought ahead to pick out chickens on purpose (mine just happened to me one day, and stayed, but I'm amazingly lucky its worked out really nice, I love them for their pet-ish nice friendly personalities).

I had little blue bantam roosters who now live in the yard of a deep red house with smokey/olive trim, the coordinated look really rocks. They have rich, deep green glossy foliaged shrubbery to peck around in, and the blue chickens with their maroon combs look great there.

For my white house with white picket fence, I get the feeling red/brown birds with red combs would look GREAT, am I right?

scratch'n'peck :

I have enjoyed the pictures here!

I would include a lot of pics of kids and their chickens of course.

You might want to go to the coop design section on this site and find pics of cute little coops in the back yard, then PM the owner of the coop and ask for permission to use the picture.

I bet the association might be afraid of how it will look to have chickens in the area, but small coops can be very cute or unobtrusive in a back yard.

I live in a community that is not gated but has that same kind of feel. I really think that what most people are worried about is the noise (so, if it were me I might not include roosters in the presentation) and also the look of the coop/run. Make sure to include pics of nice lawns and really cute coops. Plus the kids and egg pics are great!

I think this is true too, that tidy HOA communities are probably afraid of how it could look, and rightly so. Hopefully somebody can invent a tidy looking and easy care coop with a lovely run at an affordable price (in time AND money

) I posted pics of my frontyard chickens as a pretty good example, that although I love tidiness and style, the hard truth is that it's beyond me to actually achieve "the look"

because the rest of my life is demanding of my time, too. Its good to consider the reality of feathers breezing around, dirty chickens on dirty days, occasional chickens wandering out of the yard, holes in the ground where they dustbathe and the persistent excavating they tend to do wherever fine mulch is applied to tidy up a garden bed.

Unless the community carries with it's sense of secure-hearth-n-home a HEARTY sense of humor, I think chickens in the yards could be quite a stretch. All the famous people with backyard chickens, Prince Charles, Martha Stewart, Paula Deen, Jan Brett, they have farm-y property for it. Oh how I wish to see more examples of regular folks' backyard chickens, done fashionably as well as healthy!
