I would ask him for a deposit, and make it so it's worth it for him to keep up his end. I hatched some chicks for an acquaitence once that he told me he wanted, and because I knew him, I didn't ask for my usual 50% down. I ended up getting stuck with them all after he gave me some wah-wah story about how he was broke. Don't do it without making sure your butt will be covered.

Well, it sounds good for you if you are not going to raise any extras for him just give him your 'naturally-occurring' leftovers...

...BUT, it is not clear to me that's going to be what this guy is looking for. It sounds to me like he may be trying to sell ready-to-lay pullets, which generally involves having contracted with someone else to buy a certain number of a certain breed.

The only other thing I can think of would be for 'ethnic' food buyers who prefer non-CornishX for their meat birds, in which case your leftovers might be ok for him.

Of course I can think of a whole bunch of less rosy possibilities, e.g. training fighting animals, but I won't go there.

(BTW, I'm confused now -- $200 per month, or $200 per four-month cohort of birds?)

I guess basically it comes down to finding out whether there is something mutually agreeable that you two can settle on. I'd still suggest a contract if it involves you raising any more birds than you would normally do.

I think its $200 for the 4 months of having them.I hope he will let me give him my left overs that I dont want. I am not going to take it as it is to much for me to do.

That sounds like a much better idea. For the most part I hate dealing with other people, especially when it comes to live animals. There are just too many things that can go wrong.

I'm gonna be ordering about 75 assorted chicks this spring, so lemme know if you will be interested in any! I'll be selling most of them, because I mostly like having them as chicks, but I will be keeping a few.

Hiya Stevie - I had to skim this thread really fast as I'm supposed to be working, so I might have missed this, but do you know what this guy wants to do with all these chickens? It all sounds kind of odd, but like I said, I could be missing something. I'm wanting you to have a much better year ahead than the one you've just been through!...JJ

If this guy is going to give you 100 day olds every 16 weeks and 200.00 dollars for the feed and care you will loose money. After the first 8 weeks your feed bill will double. I don't know if you are well aquainted with this person but has he said what he is going to do with these birds when he picks them up? I don't know about your state law but if he is buying them to re-sell for meat to consumers then you both could get into a lot of trouble. Are you a USDA inspected producer? Is he a USDA distributor?? Does he own a restaurant or something? I don't mean to butt in here but 100 chickens every 16 weeks is a lot of chickens for one family to consume. Could be that he eats chicken every day and he does consume that much. I don't know. I wouldn't want to see you get into trouble.

I am not usda inspected and I dont know him. He saw my post on craigslist for free buff orp roosters. I know you dont want me to get in trouble so I am not taking this offer. I wanted you guys to help me and you did.
