I have many silkies right now and love them. They aren't as skittish as they get older, long as you play with them every day. Mine come running to me when I come outside. Very gentle so far, no experience with grown roos as I can't keep them.
I have been successful so far in resisting the silkie urge, but you people are seriously making it difficult! I want a rainbow!!! How can they do this to me just over the computer??? I've never even seen a real one before. They must really be EVIL!
I have 11 silkies, black, grey, white, I love them all.
they are 7 weeks old, I am still working on who is a roo ,
they do that roo dance. oh, there are a few frizzles in this mix too.
they are hysterical to watch.
the two frizzle roos are the ones who do the roo dance.
one white silkie does it with them. the others never join in, so I am hoping the rest are hens!
The roo mating dance won't be seen till about 5 months old. Chest bumping thing happens between boys and girls for the first few months! So that won't tell you anything. Just gotta wait it out!
My 3 Silkeys seem to be slower moving, and less free-ranging than the others (sex linked, polish, old english). They walk around the yard vs running, and stay closer. One is quite friendly, one is O.K. and the other stand-offish. My silkeys seem to 'talk' quietly and constantly. One roosts with the others, and the other 2 sleep on a low shelf. The white one is always full of mud and muck seems like even when dry. I can pretty much be shure that if it is too cold/hot/wet they will give me hell, but they stay out in all kinds of weather. I sometimes think they are dumber that the rest, and have been suprised that other breeds have been eaten by preditors, when I have had losses. ----They are cute, and I will keep them, but no more. I want to keep breeds that lay eggs better, and are a larger food source than Silkeys when I get hungry.
I'm up to 19 Silkies now, 9 partridge, 3 black, 1 grey, 2 white, 1 cuckoo, 1 buff, and 2 I think are splashes. They range in age from 1 1/2 weeks up
to 8 weeks. They are all chicks that I hatched in the incubator.
They are hilarious, but do take over your life. We can only keep 1 rooster
and my SO is planning on chicken dinner for the rest. I'm not sure that
I can let him do it.
I absolutely love my ten silkies. I started with five in March and am up to ten now. They mated with the cochin roosters can you imagine...they go broody and are awesome mothers! I had two moms with two babies and one of the moms took over the other two. She's still ushering them around.
They do chatter all the time and won't let anyone bully them when they have babies. I noticed today that I have another one broody...those silkies are going to take over my hen-dom, but am I alarmed....no their evil eyes have hypnotized me.
