I ordered chicks for the first time...

Apparently they are having a slow hatch. Mine did not ship until yesterday...but the lady could not tell me when they all finished hatching so who knows what time they actually shipped. Still. Priority??? I would think that they would try for overnight with all those poor babies. I don't think I am going to order through the mail any more.

It makes me too nervous....and I just want to keep calling all parties involved and pester them.... I guess maybe I would feel better if it was early spring instead of the beginning of a long winter...

That makes me feel a little better. I was having a slow hatch here also. This is so nerve-wracking I think I will just hatch my own eggs after this and not try day-olds. It was fairly nice yesterday but it's really cold here today.

I totally agree with you there. I am sooo nervous. I am driving everyone around me including myself nuts. Good luck, let's hope both our orders are all OK... (and everyone's who are waiting....)

I hope you all get your chicks safely!!

Thanks for all the tips. I have a brooder cage and a red heat light with a dimmer on it to control temps. I'm planning on putting the chicks in my back room for the first couple weeks, and then they will move to our garage where it's not drafty, but also unheated. I'm thinking of using a refrigerator box inside to make a mini run for them...I just have to find a box.

Does anyone know how Ideal ships? A friend of mine got chicks from Ideal (delivered to VA) and they came the next day after hatching. I hope mine come the next day. They are set to hatch on the 24th, and if they cut it too close they might be stuck over Thanksgiving. I would have a box of dead chicks for certain. I'm really really nervous about the holiday being so close to the ship date.

I would call them and ask specifically. I can't even tell how McMurray ships with their shipping charges and I am still thinking about calling them and asking.

Just knowing my chicks were shipped yesterday and have not arrived yet and are probably on a cold truck somewhere is driving me batty!

Never again... I am investing in or making an incubator and doing it myself. At least then I will have a little more immediate response and much more control...

Farmgirlie! Your cards and stuff are very cool!

I just ordered from Ideal, they shipped them out on Wed and I got them today. I contacted the post office earlier this week, gave them my cell number and the lady there said that they are shipped by Priority Mail and its a regulation they have to arrive the next day. Mine were all fine, a little cold but seemed to be fine.
The PO called me at 7:10 this a.m., I was just getting out of the shower.

A regulation that they have to arrive the next day? For Ideal? or for everyone? Ugh! then why is it taking sooo long... ???

Thanks about my cards. I'll keep everyone posted on when my chicks do arrive. The hatchery mailed them yesterday and it is only 190 mi – about 3 hours 5 mins according to google maps but I called all the local area Post Offices and they don't have them:( My poor chickies. I really hope they get here alive. Wish I would have drove after them cause I could have gotten them faster than the mail is getting them here.
