I picked up 6 random chicks at Tractor Supply and I'm not sure what kind they are? Can someone help

Thank all of you for the information and welcomeing me to BYC! I had in mine that it was a speckled sussex. I am lookin forward to my time here at BYC and finding out lots of info on my chicks :)

That is great! 3 of 4 of my hens are sittin on their eggs currently. Silkies and buff orphingtons appear to be my best layers.

I've had both breeds (still have Buff Orpingtons) and, trust me, your Orpingtons will outlay your Silkies. So will your Sussex.

Silkies are eye candy, usually gentle, kid favorites and generally very good broody hens. People often buy them for that factor alone. Once they are broody you can put fertile eggs of any breed under them and they will hatch and raise them as their own. Sure beats trying to figure out finicky incubators.

Drumstick diva is right. Silkies are terrific brooders and mothers. Our Black Silkie hens raised a number of broods for us.

Alright
