It is SUCH a challenge to navigate the health care system.
Have you checked in your county to see if there are any free clinics or "critical care" centers? When I was working in Washington state (and had health insurance) I had a persistently hoarse voice (which could have been a sign of throat cancer.) I couldn't actually see a normal doctor because they were all full and not taking ANY new patients. But there was a "critical care" center sponsored by the county, and you could drop in there with any kind of problem, and it would cost the same as a normal doctor visit, and it was after workday hours which was great for a nine-to-fiver like I was at the time. They referred me to a throat specialist, who happened to be a softie and performed the procedure for me (sticking a camera up my nose and down my throat) at a reduced rate. So -- ask around and see if you can find any county programs, and then look for "flexible" doctors like that. Some people are doctors because they want to earn a lot of money, but some are doctors because they really care about other people!
(FYI -- ERs are so expensive. Avoid them like the plague if you can! I once paid $300 for a tetanus shot and 1 minute of a doctor's time. OUCH.)
