Hi!
Welcome to BYC! I don't think I would use lye in my brooder. Did you say you know why your chicks have runny eyes and noses? How are you treating it?

I think she was saying she doesn't know what is causing it. Maybe a typo.Hi!Welcome to BYC! I don't think I would use lye in my brooder. Did you say you know why your chicks have runny eyes and noses? How are you treating it?
I would strip all of the bedding material. I have a sheet of craft paper on the bottom of my brooder then a layer of pine shavings and that is all. Definitely leave out the lye!
The wood is from I old Pontoon boat. The unit its self is the back of a box truck. As of right now I'm in Texas so no heat lamp needed lol. I as talking to someone today and they told me it maybe Caused by mosquitoes and there something I can put in their water. What is your brooder box made of?
When chicks are in the brooder box, where is it located?
What heat source, if any, do you provide?
Ok thank you. I'm not sure if I have Cedar but that is something that I will take note ofIt occurred to me that the OP might be using cedar shavings in the brooder box. That is definitely advised against.
Thank you it nice to be here. No I dont know why my chicken are having trouble. I was having trouble before the lye. Everyone is tell not to use it so I'll stop. Someone was telling me today that I maybe caused by mosquitoes, And there is something I could put in the water but they couldn't remember what it was.I think she was saying she doesn't know what is causing it. Maybe a typo.
Thank you so much for your time. All of this is very good to know. I think it's from Mosquito bites, and there some medicine I could put in the water. You have give me alot of good info thanks again.I don't know how big a body of water you are thinking of. Maybe the waterer the chicks use? Or a pond or birdbath? For small open areas like bird bath or a bucket of drinking water for other critters, you can put just a few drops of oil, olive or vegetable oil on the surface of the water. It will keep mosquitos from breeding. For larger areas, like decorative ponds, there is a little disc of mosquito killer you can put in the water. They are called "Dunks" or "Mosquito Dunks". They won't harm birds or pets, and dissolve slowly over time, I think. They make them for birdbaths, too.
If you think mosquitos are breeding in your waterer for your chicks, you can put a little piece of a Dunk in the container. They can be purchased at garden centers.
But, honestly, I don't think mosquitos would cause the kind of reaction you speak of.
Either an ongoing infection or something is irritating their eyes and nasal passages.
If getting rid of the lye and the shavings doesn't help. you could try an antibiotic ointment for eyes. Good luck!
Yes I was thinking that too. Thanks for info I'll try to look in to that.I was talking to the father in law(boat builder by hobby chicken grower by trade) and you say you reclaimed wood for the brooder. If that wood was treated it could cause respiratory distress also depending what they used to treat it. Especially when it is heated.
