You're saying that if I have a fenced in yard, I shouldn't let my three and a half year old out to play? That if someone else's dogs break into my fence (dig under, etc) that it's *my* fault for letting my child play in my private yard?

...they DO know the differance..honest..unless they are prone to attacking humans...then its a very differant story...

Some dogs do. Some don't. My ex-upstairs neighbor had a young german shepherd who regularly tried to chase and tackle my sons because they'd panic and start to run. Now, I wasn't letting them around the puppy unsupervised, but that's not my point. The point is that even the best intentions can still lead to an injured child. And these animals had a HISTORY of violence. So no, I don't really care if it was "only" other dogs and poultry, they need to stay the hell away from my kids. Rehomed or put down, no negotiations IMO.

Yes, and what happens if a child (or even an adult for that matter) witnesses an attack and tries to stop it. Will a dog in a killing frenzy try to guard his prey and hurt the human? When the pack and predator instinct kicks in all bets are off.

I know this will make me unpopular on this poultry site but why do chickens seem to take precedence over everything including common sense. The dogs in most cases are just doing what comes naturally. The real problem is the people who own the dogs.

It's not that chickens take precedence over dogs or common sense. It's that the dogs are apparently owned by a person who has no respect for other humans property and possesions. When this occurs there are two choices for the dogs. Put them down or give them to another person who will care for them and respect others property and belongings.
The chicken owner should use legal action to recover the loss from the dog owner and then the law should take care of how the dog owner will handle future problems either through fencing, giving away or putting down.

Once a dog gets chicken killing in his blood he will NEVER QUIT! Proven fact for hundreds of years. This is why putting the dogs down is the main response.

They're actually pretty serious predators in their own right - miniature distant relatives of Tyrannosaurus Rex. Ask any bug.

Hey, why don't we have any bug's rights activists?

I like that observation! I was watching one of my hens brutally attack an innocent victim (bug) with fascination as to how she smashed it repeatedly til the wings bent off and she gobbled it up, then looked right at me with her sweet little eyes.

Just imagine if the "miniature t-rex" was 100x biiger? I dont think those sweet eyes would be sweet anymore lol

Ouch! Perhaps the world would be a better place if the chickens really could defend themselves better. Off topic-- anyone breeding a truly GIANT Jersey giant out there?

Well heck -- why do people want gamefowl breeds if they're not chicken fighters?

Pits -- whether pit dogs or pit birds -- are bred for courage and "heart". These can be very attractive parts of a personality, whether you fight the animals or not.

My breed of choice is dobermans -- another breed that people often see as dangerous. I greatly admire the courage of both breeds.

And speaking specifically of pits, you need to remember that real fighting pits are bred specifically to NOT be aggressive to people. Remember, during a pit fight the "pit man" has to be able to separate the dogs WITHOUT getting attacked himself.

Both pits and dobes get a bad rap, in large part because of ignorant people who misuse and misbreed them. It ain't the dogs' fault if the people are idjits!

All that said -- IMHO these ridgebacks probably do need to be put down. Unfortunately, they have already shown fatal aggression towards multiple species -- and if their owners are as stupid as they sound, the dogs could be a serious danger to humans as well. I don't know whether it's already been mentioned here, but remember that ridgebacks were created to hunt LIONS. They can do a lot of damage.
