I pretty much do this same thing. I will do everything in my power to safeguard my chickens from predators. But, if there is some animal that is going to break into my hen house and kill the flock, then they probably won't live to try it again. If it is my fault and the chickens are out and about and get nabbed, then that is my fault and only the chicken loses.
I am also going to protect myself and my family while on my property. If there is a critter that I feel threatened by, then I am going to dispose of it. If it is just a stray dog that's not going to hurt anything as long as the chickens are safely in the hen house, then I will try to get him to mosey on down the road.
Look folks, I have a hard enough time trying to process chickens without feeling really bad, but, if it threatens me or my families food supply (not counting my stupidity some days) then, that critter won't be around to try it again. Since I am disabled, I have a hard enough time just doing daily chores, let alone trying to run away from a mad dog, bear, poisonous snakes, etc.
I want to let as many things in this world live as I can, just like me, but sometimes that line is crossed, and something needs to be done. Hope my ramblings make sense, and if not, I apologize.
