If I said that "I think that people who have only been on here a short time really should not let loose with opinions like that, it would be akin to saying that people shouldnt post their opinions on how to handle the dogs killing chickens. This is a CHICKEN WEB SITE, what do you expect? If you dont like what is being said then post your OPINION........and then move on.

IMO lol

I pretty much do this same thing. I will do everything in my power to safeguard my chickens from predators. But, if there is some animal that is going to break into my hen house and kill the flock, then they probably won't live to try it again. If it is my fault and the chickens are out and about and get nabbed, then that is my fault and only the chicken loses.

I am also going to protect myself and my family while on my property. If there is a critter that I feel threatened by, then I am going to dispose of it. If it is just a stray dog that's not going to hurt anything as long as the chickens are safely in the hen house, then I will try to get him to mosey on down the road.

Look folks, I have a hard enough time trying to process chickens without feeling really bad, but, if it threatens me or my families food supply (not counting my stupidity some days) then, that critter won't be around to try it again. Since I am disabled, I have a hard enough time just doing daily chores, let alone trying to run away from a mad dog, bear, poisonous snakes, etc.

I want to let as many things in this world live as I can, just like me, but sometimes that line is crossed, and something needs to be done. Hope my ramblings make sense, and if not, I apologize.

I don't think "snapping" is the big danger here. Most dogs are great animals and don't "snap" but they WILL play and rough play can injure pretty badly, too.

All the leash laws in the world will not stop a dog who is not cared for and roams due to irresponsible owners. For a leash law to work, it has to be in place and have something to back it up. There is a law here that a dog off his property must be on a leash. Well, people here dont know or they just dont care about the law. And animal control has ONE officer for the county, as far as I know. The head of the county commission, when receiving complaints on top of complaints just said for a property owner to shoot a dog if it was a nuisance. This is what he told a local farmer who had lost several calves to packs of dogs. So, laws mean nothing if not enforced strictly. I'm pretty sure my county is very much like many here in the U.S., especially in rural areas.

Not just that but most of the "pitbull" stories you have read or heard about are really mixed breed dogs. I have a book about pitbulls and it says that the media uses "pitbull" just to scare people. Pitbulls have been trianed for over 100 years to kill dogs but not human beings. If one where to attack human beings it would be killed on site. my pitbull never attacked anybody or any dog. actually he was attacked by my moms b/f german shephard.

figure this one out for me. In stephen kings movie Cujo. There was a beethoven dog (I forgot what breed) that killed people in it and attacked a small boy. Now these dogs are technically gentle giants and was just trained in the movie to be like that. some dork in FL saw the movie and banned those gentle giants in some county. isnt that great?

I dont think anyone has said they're going dog-hunting. They are just protecting their investment and their pets and themselves against roving predators on their own property. Humans have done that for thousands of years, just as chickens have been food and dogs have been predators. Seems reasonable to me. Whether the dog is doing something that comes naturally or not isnt even the issue, IMO. I would say it is UNnatural to allow predators to do as they will with your chickens, just because they cant help themselves. It's just that simple to me. And I love both dogs and chickens. Have owned quite a few of both.

Chickens are PREY animals, but they are my prey animals. As such I will protect them.
Cujo was a saint benard. We had 2 of them when I was growing up. They were of course nothing like Cujo, but they were very protective of children and bit 2 women that seemed like threats to them. 1 was hit by a car,the other was rehomed to a family without children.
Pits are not good guard dogs, they do keep stray dogs off of the property though.Hypnosteve is right on that. They've been bred to fight other dogs. The main problem with this breed is the type of people who want them. They want a mean dog,so they go out of their way to make it so.

Hey everyone there is some real good discussion going on. I think most of us can, or will soon relate to having a dog come and kill chickens. Last Sunday I watched a Buff Orpington lay her second egg after spending 2 hours making a sweet little nest. Only to have her mauled by a stray dog in my yard 4 hours later. If I could have I would have shot the dog on the spot. If I catch a dog after my chickens Its dead! I am not sure what feels worse; knowing I just killed a dog that could have been some awesome pet, Or looseing my chickens because some num nuts has moved to the country where their dog can run. I am angry and I really feel a loss for my chicken, and I feel a loss for the money I put into her and the eggs I will loose. After my anger cooled on Sunday I remembered what I always try to share with poultry people. PREVENTION!PREVENTION! PREVENTION!I have shot a lot of dogs! I have also loved a few dogs! I dont want to shoot any more. So I am going to put a fence accross the front of my property thus fencing it completly in. I will shut my chickens in at night. Its not really the dogs fault it finds chickens irisistable!
