I understand if it is a wild animal like a coyote, raccoon, hawk, etc. but not a domesticated animal like a dog or a cat. That is somebodys pet.

We need to predator proof every inch of our coops, that way, if a dog, or cat comes into your yard, there is no way your chickens can be attacked. If a dog or cat, raccoon, etc, gets into your coop, its your fault for not predator proofing it. Its simple, predator proof your coop, or dont get mad when your chickens get killed.

soooo ,, do you keep a child in his room because someone might beat him up at school? ,, do you guys realize that your blaming the VICTIM and saying its the VICTIMS fault they didnt run a 220 volt wire around them,, and THEY allowed the "criminal" to get them cause there MUSTA been something else they could have done to be in a safe bubble???????????????????????????????

Well... what about a pack of 5 dogs that dig under my horse pasture fence and gang up on my mostly blind and deaf horse? The horse was in my pasture and got along just great. Knew where the obstacles were, ate and drank well, just couldn't defend himself well against the dogs.

Do I turn the other cheek and just continually shoo the "bad doggies" away? I did talk with the owner who made no attempt the keep the dogs out of my pasture. One way or the other the dogs' owner needed to be responsible for his dogs and keep them off my property or the dogs would be disposed of.

I feel very sorry for the dogs in question that were responsible for decimating someone's flock of chickens. BUT, the dogs need to be confined to their own property. That doesn't necessarily mean tied up, or that they can't roam, as long as they're confined to their own property.

i wonder if it goes the other way,,,,, what if my bird went in my neighbors yard, and the dog killed my bird,,,, how does that work out?

EDIT: ta say ,,, what do you guys do to mosquitoes that are biting ya?

That is not somebody's pet. Sure, there's an outside chance that it was fenced in, got out and the owners are frantic, however, the chances of that are slim. Most of the time, these people are allowing the dog to roam at will. I know-I live in the country where they think they are being responsible if they grab a stray and stick a collar on it. No tag, mind you, just the collar.

And although my coop is predator proof, you really cannot predator proof a fence against some powerful dog breeds, who literally tear and peel back hardware wire with their teeth to get at the birds. Sure you do your best, but sometimes, that is not enough. And really, that is irrrelevant. Because I care about my birds, my property is fenced with livestock fencing and a gated driveway, then on top of that, there are tight coops and several pens with 5', up to 7' fencing, wrapped in hardware cloth and chickenwire, which is also turned outward and buried at the base. I think by perimeter fencing this place, then providing pens on top of that, I've done as much as I should have to do. It's up to the dog owner to keep that dog on their own property. I dont care if it's the city, county or in the middle of nowhere, everyone should fence their dogs. If someone cant afford the fence to keep the dog and others safe, then that person should not have a dog, period. A pet is something cared for by the owner, enough to see to its safety. A roaming dog is not a pet, it's a predator, no if's and's or but's.
If my bird escapes my fencing and goes to my neighbor's property and is killed by their dog, I have nothing to complain about. That is why the perimeter fencing. Livestock fencing isn't that expensive, either.

Then I'd be out a bird with no one to blame but myself!

In 8 years of living "in the country" I've only had one occasion where MY critters got off our property and headed down the road. Two of my horses decided to take a neighborhood stroll when they discovered that DH had left our perimeter gate open. I have great neighbors who assisted with the "round-up" and no chickens were harmed in the process!

If someones "pet" dogs come on our property and bother our cows and calves or my chickens the SSS principle comes into play and the problem doesn't repeat itself.

How about when your animals are fence in a predator proof pen. Then the dogs come running up and around the pen, until the birds fly into the fence breaking their neck. Even had that happen with a pet deer. She broke her neck trying to get away from dogs, her inside a pen, dogs on the outside chasing her untill she broke her neck.

Dont think the dogs have to get in the pen to kill your birds, Had my share of dead peafowl were the dog kill them from outside the pen also.

Yes I get MAD just because people will not keep their dogs up.

Like my father said more people get attack my dogs that dont bite.So the owner alway say.
