How do you keep your friends from expecting eggs for free?? I have tried to explain to them that we have to pay for feed and are only asking a little bit of money for each dozen to help pay for the feed. But they act offended and then go to the store and buy month old eggs for more than I'm asking?? I don't get it!!

Hi, Lovemyfeatherbabies - I'm just down the road from you, in Bessemer City!

We do give free eggs to my in-laws, who live next door, and occasionally gift some to friends. The friends who want them on a regular basis have no problem with us asking for a couple bucks for a dozen eggs. They like the way our eggs taste - much better than store-bought eggs, and understand that we do have some costs associated with food, shelter, etc.

I don't get why your friends would get upset that you are just looking to feed your flock, and spend more for eggs that aren't as fresh and good.

Just don't understand people sometimes!

I wouldn't consider anyone a friend who expected something for nothing from me. Let them act as they wish, I'd say.

I give some eggs away, too -- but not to the kind of people who would expect this.

LOL - I know! I'm not sure how a play date would go, though - a friend of mine brought us a hen she wanted us to cull because it was an egg-eater. She wanted to get a couple chickens from us to replace her, so we gave her two of our 6-month old pullets. She wanted two because she was afraid her remaining 3 chickens would pick on the new ones. The two pullets we gave her terrorized her three hens; she ended up bringing the meaner one back to us and keeping only one, who was at the top of the pecking order in her little flock.

We've got mean-a$$ country chickens.

Is that a Barred Rock in your avatar? That's what we are raising.

I give my parents free eggs and people who I know need them...but not people who are going to go out and buy them just because I didn't give them away for free!

BusyBlonde, that is a barred rock and when you have a roo you need to sell I am in the market! I want to breed my girls since they are so beautiful and lay very well! We may have to meet and talk chickens sometimes...because I think my husband may tape my mouth if I talk about them much more LOL

We give free eggs to family but then again they have us over for dinner alot and feed us back. I'd say these people are not great friends. If you breed dogs would they expect free puppies?

On the other side, if they want free eggs, you could offer them two dozen each time they do your spring cleaning of the chicken coop

We give eggs to people as kind of treats. We had some windows put in and we gave each guy a dozen, the neighbor gave us chickens so we share with them. But, I have a gal at work that expects eggs from me and is offended when I ask for a couple bucks.... People are funny sometimes.
