I've posted this twice already but only got one reply. (Thanks, JoAnne!) I thought I'd try again. One of my new chicks that just arrived today has a very thin thread about 2 inches long coming off her bottom. It's below the vent and appears to be coming out of kind of a black lump. She seems healthy otherwise. She's active and has been eating and drinking just fine. The other chicks want to pick at and peck at the little thread, though. I know I shouldn't pull it out.............but should I trim it so they don't pull at it? Should I be concerned? Any thoughts would be MOST appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

That's normal - I've had that happen many times. Not sure if it's part of the yolk sac or what but it will dry up and come off. If it's all dried like a thread, it's ok to snip it off before the others pick at it.

Yes, I would bet it's not from her bottom, but is part of the dried up umbilical cord.

If it is very long, and is thoroughly dried, you might CAREFULLY snip it shorter, but only enough so it does not drag or get pecked. It will indeed fall off very soon.

Good luck, and please keep us posted!

I agree with all of the others, if it seems a problem but is dry, snip with scissors and she will be ok.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!! I thought it would be OK to trim it but didn't want to until I'd consulted the experts here at BYC. I'm off to trim it right now.
