I reject your facts... Or, my how time changes opinions.

@lazy gardener OMG I do love that MHP(40w) vs 250w lightbulb. I will never claim I use best practices just good enough practices.

My poor abused chickens drink water and I don't add either diddly or squat to it. I don't believe in spreading carcinogenic DE to their coop, just throw in hay. I must be the worst keeper in history and they free range unsupervised all day. Truth is here a 50 pound bag of feed lasts me way too long.

If you think about it each bird should be eating .25 pounds of feed .25x7x30=52.5, yeah mine don't do 50+ pounds/month on the feed bill. Definately I am not saying my way is right but my birds seem well enough how they are going. I am certainly not attacking anyone as I am still screwing up a lot on my own. In 10 years I might be an authority like others in this post but I am not there now nor am I seeing any alarm signs that my practices are horrid.
Wish I didn't feed that much every month....i feed that much in 3 or 4 days but then I have over 300 pheasants and quail to feed.:D

You know Sean I am really jealous of your golden pheasants. I think my wife and I want some when you start breeding. We were talking about you earlier. Ok we are just dang jealous.

Haven't been to SPI in years. Last time I was there (lsla Blanca) was to perform some maintenance on one of the air monitoring stations I ran for the State (TCEQ)
Use to go there, then to Port O'Conner, then to Mauriceville, then to Wichita Falls, then to Big Bend National Park. Did that trip every 2 weeks. :th

All cholesterol is evil and horrible and you should never eat eggs! They're terrible for you!

But oh... wait... apparently there's good cholesterol, as well... Eat lots of eggs!.

Yup. 2 years ago I went to my DR and said I wanted to go back on a hi protein diet. She said it wasn't good for me. I've done them before and had great results and felt the best when on them. Well, I researched KETO and started 2 months ago. It is a hi fat, 70% and medium protein, 30% diet. I am down 70lbs. Now one must realize it is a lifestyle change...meaning for life. Mental fog is gone, inflammation gone, mood greatly improved. Went and saw the DR last week. Well, she is doing the same diet with a tad more carbs. She is so anti sugar that she was even quoting conspiracy theories of sugar subsidies and big pharma. She did all my tests and all my numbers are incredible! They usually are anyway, but after 2 months of 70% fat and less than 5% carbs they were better than 2 years ago.

Point is, everyone is different and research is often sponsored by someone who has something to gain.

Now, I wanted to do everything right. Healthy birds for meat and eggs and a good life for the birds. There was info overload…and the arguments. You should only do this and not that. And I tell you, I nearly said forget it. This is going to cost too much and be too labor intensive to make it a go. But I kept on. Then life happened. I suffered a spinal injury and was told I would never work again. Well, it took 5 years but I made it back into the workforce and we got somewhat back to normal financially. Then a neighbor down the road said take these birds for free…then a son in law did the same…. So I came back to this site to gain information that I had forgotten. What a difference a few years makes…Below are some of the things that I have noticed. Not saying any are right or wrong, but the pendulum has swung....

So go out and do your research…but just be aware that research and opinions can get intertwined. Raise your birds the best you can, enjoy them, and be happy.

What an inspiration you are! I nearly said "forget it," too! But I'm proceeding by reading lots of stuff, taking it all with a grain of salt, and following my instincts for what I think a chicken would like and how I can take what has been given to me and turn it into safe chicken habitat. Trying to get in touch with my "Chicken Mama" self. Thank you!

Lol
You must have been talking to my daughter.

Gotta love chicken.
The only animal you're allowed to eat before its born.

Many and many a moons ago....

My grandfather was at a Department of Game function, and was complaining about the terrible elk seasons. There was never a good elk hunting season available any more!

The director of the Department of Game at that time, in that place, overheard him and confronted him, saying essentially; 'You tell me what you want to hunt, and I guarantee you there's a season for it!'

To which... my grandfather replied.. "Cow elk in April."

The man just walked away.

See, in April, cow elk are heavily pregnant and will be giving birth soon. My grandfather had no teeth, and refused to get dentures. He wanted that nice, young tender fetal elk meat.
