well i have been really looking at raising some Quail my Landlord said i can, and this weekend am going to a friends House who breeds 100's of them. to see his Set up and see the birds first hand. Now i have seen some Amazing Coops and pens. but many of you have wood laying around and even chicken wire..but i do not..I might beable to find some Tin for a room laying around the yard but besides that...everything will be Store bought, i dont know what to Expect when it comes to a price. any of you have photos/links to your Pens but With a price tag or can you Guess of a price tag? thank you!

Do you have access to Freecycle or Craigslist? Keep an eye on them (look in the "Free" section of Craigslist) and in no time you will have access to tons of building materials....free.

In my case I repurposed a cage I originally built for some rats years ago, into my current quail cage. It wasn't free then as I purchased the materials but it has been sitting empty ever since my last rat died so I was happy to put it to use for my quail. Try to "think outside the box" when it comes to quail housing. Mine doesn't look like anyone else's but it does the job.

i have been looking at a few things i might be able to use. i Might be able to get some Wood pallets i was thinking maybe there is a way to use them..take them apart or something...going to keep looking.

$33.00 for five metres of mouse proof wire due to the fact that I invested in a big roll. without getting into trouble try bin diving near industrial sites for other bits and pieces or ask near housing construction.

mine were all store bought but I did not use any wood or lumber in their construction somewhere her there are a coupla pictures most PVC plumbing pipe and eel pot wire that and a little bit of 1" X 2" welded wire

Thank you for the compliment. I'll have To post new shots of the double door dividable super brooder I built using the same wood. Also to keep on track of the original subject, last night on the way home i found a 24X48 chest with a broken lid someone had on the curb. I fixed the lid and now have an additional brooder/pen or what I am using it now for is an hospital cage for the lesser dominant roos that have been scalped.

So keep your eyes open and don't be afraid to scrounge and modify things that you can get for free.

I find, now that I'm looking for coop building materials, that I'm driving through the neighborhood more slowly. '

Oh, what is that person doing with all that wood? Looks like they're not using it."
"That person has a pile of pallets, maybe they don't need them!"
"Ohhh, a large piece of metal siding. they don't need that do they?!"

I've also noticed a few businesses in our little town that have piles of wood on the sides of their buildings, looks like its all going unused. Now I just have to get up the courage to go knocking on some doors to beg for free supplies.

I even posted on my facebook, asking for any unused wood from local friends. No one has said anything yet but crossing fingers. I did pick up a pile of wood from my brother's garage that he wasn't using, so don't forget to ask family and friends.

the pallet idea is really good..am pretty sure i can get a hold of few i know i have 2 scrap things of tin for a roof..One is all rusty but the other one is in pretty good shape...might be on to something.
