Right now I'd say keep doing what you are doing! I hope he makes it!
In the future I would find a good vet that will take emergencies. I also live in a rural area and have been in your place, but I promise if you are willing to drive alittle you can find a vet.
We have two local vets, neither do emergencies, one I just don't care for, the other is a nice lady, and I've used her plenty for minor things, but she is way behind the times, no xrays, she doesn't do broken bones, you can't get her after hours and you are very lucky if you can get her during hours! This is the vet we used when I was growing up, and I lost plenty because I had an emergency after hours. The last time I called her office help told me she couldn't give me an appointment, but the vet would call me, she didn't! (I'm glad after I went ahead and went to my regular vet I desided it wasn't something she could have handled).
As soon as I was an adult and got my first puppy, I found me a decent vet! I had to drive an hour away, but it was worth it. Unfortunately I have a variety of animals, and I had a hard time finding a clinic that would treat them all, at one time I was using 5 different vets! Then I had a couple goat kids break their legs! I'd been using the local vet who doesn't do broken legs, took me quite abit of calling to find someone that did goats, and I had found my new vet clinic!! All my animals can go there, in fact I was there just this morning! (or I guess it would be yesterday morning now). I still have to drive an hour away, but I'm not losing another pet due to not being able to get ahold of someone in an emergency. I've needed these guys a few times, and they are always there! I can still go to the local one for certain pet meds (although I rarely do at this point).
One problem w/ waiting til you have an emergency to find an emergency vet is, many vets won't see you if you aren't a client! My last dog and cat vet used an emergency clinic that was made up of several vet clinics that would take turns being on call, but they would not see you if you weren't a client of one of their clinics! (I liked them to, but all they did was dogs and cats).
