It's just one baby. But different views. I had given "mama" 2 eggs. One was good and one was bad.

Candled the broody's eggs. the 2 ee/mutt eggs are progressing nicely, the 2 silkie eggs look good but one has what looks like the start of a blood ring. I'm going to let her keep it for a few more days and recheck.

BTW.... whoever said to candle at night to avoid getting pecked since the broody is asleep?

Got the living fire pecked out of me both times I've candled her eggs!

Okay, so my son & I candled tonight (day 11 for me).
We set aside 6 eggs from my 3/21 set that (we think) were duds. Seeing as we have had such issues. three is ok. 1 of the 3 that are left is the waving/dancing cochin chick that I posted about before- I really don't see movement, but quite a bit of the egg is dark- but there is a thick dark line as well. I'm leaving it in because I'm just not sure!

Anyway- I had also set 5 more eggs in on 3/5. I'm happy to report that ALL (if I remember right) have veining & heart-beats. One even had an eye spot already!

So I'm down to 9 eggs out of 16..... That just leaves room for the BCM eggs that I won. They should be here by Friday.

Wow this thread moves fast!! Fun times with these new babies arriving! I'm getting more and more excited about next week and the eggs we all have ready to hatch. I candled again Monday night and (with courage) cracked open the ones I thought were duds. Thankfully (or maybe, sadly) they actually were duds. So I have just one Maran left out of the original 5 sent. I sure hope that one remaining maran hatches for us! The favorelles are trucking along great!

We have just 3 hens and two of them are now broody - fighting over the 4 eggs I set under broody #1 back on day one. I don't have anywhere to separate them, so I guess I'll let them figure it out. Once's a bantum brahma and the other is an old english game hen. They are both very sweet and non-aggressive and sometimes they are sitting in the nestbox together.

I know what you mean...when culling the eggs, I really don't know what I'd be looking for. And I really don't want to find a little baby chick. So, I don't crack them open. I'm sure as I do this more that will change. But for now...

So, I set 24 BLRW eggs in with my other 19 eggs. The first batch of 19 are due on 3/17. The BLRW eggs will be due on 3/28. I currently have them in a GQF sportsman 1502 with Automatic turner and waterer and a hatching tray. Has anyone ever done a staggered hatch before? I'm just worried the high humidity for the first batch of eggs on day 18 (day 7 for the new ones) will be a problem for the BLRW. I don't have a 2nd bator.

So, what do you all think?

Any help is greatly appreciated

You have the 4 eggs. I, personally, would give each girl 2 eggs in seperate nesting boxes. The restling over the eggs may cause them not to develope due to too much movement. If you don't have 2 nesting boxes, I would make one. Just my opinion.

I didn't candle all my eggs last night, but I did candle.

All 7 BBS Orp eggs have veining and I saw movement on a couple. (and these are shipped eggs so I'm thrilled)

All 6 of my eggs are infertile. I knew that my light brahma's eggs were fertile (didn't put those in) but I was hoping my BR and EE eggs would be fertile. (a couple looked fertile before I set) Oh well, I guess I just wasted eating eggs. My cockeral is only 19 weeks, so he's still young.

I've got four nestboxes and no matter how I arrange the eggs, they both want to sit on the nestbox farthest to one side. So I'm afraid if I put 2 in one and 2 in the other, then whichever one is next the last nestbox, those eggs will be ignored. I even went so far as to put 4 eggs in that empty nestbox (non-fertile ones) to see if that would keep them from disagreeing over the "live" nestbox. Nope. They both are sitting on them together.

I will have to separate them, I guess - somehow.

Question - would the broody hen be okay in a 24x24 sized rabbit cage for the next week? I could just put her on my stacking units reserved for bunnies...
