I will say that I took a certain satisfaction in nailing her from 20’!

And it’s just like squirting cats (for training purposes only, I assure you!) - they can’t figure out for sure where it comes from (although they’re very suspicious), but it’s really nice to be able to give an immediate Thou Shalt Not! response to over the top bullying.

The Littles seem to be fully integrated, in the sense that they’re still junior at 12 and 10 weeks and skedaddle away from the feeder when The Bigs come, but they all sleep together, nap together in the heat of the day, sometimes dust bathe together, and mostly ignore one another.

I would love to claim credit for this, but it just sorta gradually happened in the haphazard manner that marks my life. Trudy (the Barred Rock) became Rude-y Trudy and was a junior-grade bully, but this took care of that nicely. Then Rude-y Trudy became Broody Trudy (again!), and the other four have united in concern (possibly terror) to resist the Barred Fluff of Rage who clucks maniacally 24/7.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend, maybe!

Really, any sort of squirt gun will work.

The semi-drawbackback of this specific one is that you refill it by putting it in a bowl of water, allowing it to draw in water into its tank, and it’s pretty leaky.

This is balanced by the fact that it comes two to a pack, and since I have no intention of arming Trudy with the second squirt gun (I acknowledge that this would be only fair), I can recharge the second one with water while madly squirting away with the first.

I give her about a 15-seconds heads-up by hollering at her, and then the squirt.

It’s very true that if I remained silent, it would separate the consequences from me, and I did that in the past with dogs and cats.

But chickens (I love you girls! Really!) seem to have a more primitive brain, and subtlety doesn’t seem to be required here. Getting suddenly wet definitely gets the message through.

there were so many to choose from but i wanted the smallest easiest one. not the double barrelled makes laser noises kind.

and my HUSBAND bought them a xylophone he was all "do you think they'd like this?"
i saw another one that was cheaper with drab colours but he got the pricier brighter one with a bell on the bottom
he likes them! he's caving.

Adorable. Apparently the xylophone works best if you put a blob of paint/marker/nail polish on each strip. They peck at the blob to explore just like they do on my freckles.
I have never tried it but was told that.
I guess a paper sticker would work as well.

I bet that glued on seeds or mealworms work even better. Do use eatable glue for toddlers if you want to try.
Please try them all and share the results.

those chicks are so stinkin cute!

that makes sense about the dots. so far they have taken no notice of it in there.
but it took like 2 months to realize that the cat treat ball i put in there spills worms out when you roll it. then i had to take it away like the treat block. thelma was getting abused
