the bird flu fort...

we had that stupid giant holed chicken wire for the garden, so i'm attaching bird net to the inside to keep the smaller birds out. it's just to keep the chickens in for a little more room, so i will mind them when they are in it. i also bird netted the top before i put the roof on because it will probably rip almost immediately. but it held up for 2 nights so far.
i used bits of the old little run for the door and to cover between roofs.

You are so darn nifty! That looks fantastic, great job! Those girls are so lucky to have found their way to you.

so. i have been keeping them in the run and worrying that they aren't happy but so far (🤞🏼) nobody's complaining or trying to get out. then i worry there's something wrong with them 😂
Are you sure you are obliged to keep them in the run? In Wales it’s permitted to free range small flocks. I believe @Perris told us on Shads thread.

In the Netherlands we have to keep the chickens separated too (shield for contact with wild birds). The rules stink for hobbyists. Imho its more important to keep my chickens happy & healthy than to obey the authorities. 🤞🤞 We have these stupid lockups every winter now. With a bit of bad luck from October - June.

the thing was about this time...
there have been an alarming number of seagulls around here lately. and we do not live near the sea.
and buzzards (which are hawks here, not like in america where they are vultures).
i read that there were confirmed cases in both of those.
louise was moulting and not feeling great and now it's thelma's turn. i don't know if that makes them more vulnerable to getting sick or what.

my vet friend was here last week for lunch. she said keep them in for now. so i am. and they have been really good. but i know they wouldn't mind an aul stroll through the grass.
we'll see how it goes. i don't want them to not be free.

Sorry. That sucks. Especially bc these things probably wont help the backyard poultry. The bird flu is unstoppable and everywhere bc of the contaminated wild birds. Imho, it’s all a waist of time and gives the chickens again a miserable winter period.

But if you are still in need of a solution to please the authorities I might have an idea to fence of a corridor from the run to the greenhouse.

In the past I have used rabbit panels and panels with 5cm square openings to make temporary runs. Size 80x80 and 80 x 150 cm. Easy to attach to each other with tie wraps or similar.

ooh! i haven't seen those around, but i will look. are they really rigid and strong? like a dog crate sort of?

also! just a funny thing...
when i finished today and i opened the door to the run, they were both in the "new" pot.
they just looked at me. then the door. then they sat there a couple minutes before they got up to investigate.
they were a little giddy then, but it was a delayed response.

also also.
i agree.
it's always around, isn't it? not just in the winter time?
it makes about as much sense as some of the covid rules.
like i couldn't buy forks, but i could buy yankee candles? 🤔
maybe forks caused covid 🤷🏻‍♀️
