I think I am going to have to do the unthinkable!

Ok, I just looked at your sig line. You have a lot of chickens! Can you give them a little bit of light? I am all for letting them have a rest over winter, but that is ridiculous.

There should be a balance between supplementing them with a little bit of light while still letting them have reduced winter production...

The incredible edible egg page says that chickens should get at least 14 hours of light a day to keep producing eggs. Get one of those uv light things or whatever they're called.

Heck, I'd even go so far as painting a picture of the sun and putting it in the coop, fake em out. Sing you are my sunshine at them.

Well I do have to give 9 of them credit, they are young and just approaching laying age, BUT there is no excuse for the 7 1 year old orps! They layed all through winter last year and have been doing well all summer up until now! I am going to give them some extra light, but you are right, this is ridiculous!

If the lighting doesn;t work, I will have to break out the paint brush and warm up my singing voice!! I will try anything to get my eggs back!!

Isn't that considered "cheating"?

Well, pullets do normally lay well their first winter and it's starting with the second winter that hens don't lay as well, with shorter days. That first winter is kind of a freebie. So, your 1 year old hens DO have an excuse!
