So, we bought a live trap, after the smaller one didn't work. This is the largest trap they make. I am using sardines, placing it all the way in the back of the trap. We have also used canned dog food with a zip tie around it securing it to the inside of the back of the cage. Trap door triggered every night, bait gone, no raccoon. Ideas? He's now killed 11 birds, and now my chicken house is like Ft. Knox, but I know the coon is still here, just waiting for his next opportunity.

Just curious how you intend to get rid of the raccoon if you catch it. They are clever! If there's any way they can reach the bait from outside the trap they're gonna do it. But if they get in there and are trapped they're gonna be p#ssed when it comes to emptying it. Better have a plan ready!

Maybe best to go with the Ft. Knox approach and let the raccoons figure out that there's easier prey somewhere else. ...or at least that would be my strategy.

.22 but have to catch it first. We have dealt with possums in the past, this is our first raccoon. My husband actually saw it a week ago at dusk, and he says its very large. Thanks for the advice, I think we will try wrapping the cage, or at least covering the back. The gauge of wire is smaller along the sides toward the back 1/3 of the cage but the actual back wire wall is not as small.

They love marshmallows. I bait the traps for a few nights and let the predator take the bait then set the trap. Bingo. I did it with a fox that killed my very special bird during the middle of the day. I caught it. The larger trap is a hog or coyote trap.

The smaller trap is for fox, coons, etc.

I had a pretty smart coon but my prob was it was reaching in and taking the bait, that and dragging the trap out through the woods, setting it off and just stealing the bait. I put boards on the sides and a big rock on top and got the sucker. It was a little tough pulling the trigger cause it was cute, but I did not want it killing another chicken and it only got one.
If that doesn't help you, reminds me of the old movie "where the red fern grows" I think it was. The boy caught a coon to train his dogs by making a hole of some sort with nails pounded in on a angle and a shiny penny I think it was in the bottom, coon reaches in and grabs coin nails hold its hand in, it won't let go of its prize.
I knew there was a trap like that sorta kinda, dog proof not sure if cat proof,

Maybe one of those?
Good luck!
