What a wonderful site you have provided. Alot of it is way over my head, this is our first year for Peafowl. I had no idea when we started this little venture that there would be so much to learn.


I am also new to BYC and I am sure I will find answers to my qestions somewhere on the site, if any of you have the time to answer my questions I would really appreciate your help/advice.

Have you ever used DE as a wormer? Do any of you put it along the edges of all your pens? This is where I found the info about DE www.wolfcreekranch.com

Have you tried DE for parasite removal for your own cleanse?


We have had flood warnings for the last 2 days, we found out the irrigation system we had for the pens was not very good. I am concerned about the peas with all this water standing. Today we tried to clean up the pens as best as we could in the pouring rain. Then we laid new straw, the water issue is happening under the covered part. The pens are all dirt, and we do want to plant some cover for them. Can you advise of plants that would work well?

I have a concern about the parasite they can get from earthworms. I bought 8 boxes of salt and will mix DE with the salt and sprinkle it in all our pens. I do this treatment once a month.
With it being breeding season would I want to worm again with a different wormer other than DE.

DE is more of a preventative than a wormer. If you salt your pens, nothing will grow in them. If the parasite carrying worms are a big problem in your area you may be better off trying to find a way to "worm the worms". Other wise a good worming schedule ( or have fecal checks done routinely) should keep the problem at bay.

I good worming program with a wormer like Safeguard or Valbazen is what's recommended. Safeguard gets all but tapeworms, Valbazen gets them all, but is not as safe.

Valbazen (albendazole) causes death in pigeons, doves, crias and aplastic anemia in other animals, so I'm afraid to use it.

Safeguard (fenbendazole) is used in kittens, puppies, reptiles, foals, horses, cattle, sheep, goats, etc. and *all* birds, so that is what I use.

Wazine (piperazine) only gets roundworms, so no point in using it, IMHO.
