Yes, you are crazy. But I strangely envy you, so what does that make me?

What space do you have for all that? How many chicken in all? How many coops?

Now, it is your turn to rate my own sanity:

I live in a suburban neighborhood, and our property has approximately 9000 square ft (90'x100'). I bought my first 9 hens (commercial hybrid layers) in June 2008, I got 20 chicks (pure breed layers) last April and 12 meat chicks yesterday. Actual total count with the deaths and the culling: 26 chicken.

I built a big coop in June 2008, a brooder cage last April, a big chicken tractor and a mini coop with run in May, a rooster pen under the house in June, a homemade incubator in July and a medium size coop yesterday. I intend to get 20 more chicks of different pure breeds next March and I want to try to incubate my own fertilized eggs (most probably cross breeds).

So, doctor, your diagnosis?

Most likely we are all on some level of the crazy scale.... we are here, right??

I started out with 12 hens and now I have around 50 chickens and chicks of four different breeds, plus several mutt bantams.


We are all crazy. Just ask any non-chicken people!
