We had our first brood of chicks march 30, 2012, we have fallen in love with all ten of our little darlings. They are beautiful and are on my profile (haven't figured out how to get them on here yet). The reason I fear I'll be disappointed is because of a genetic fact I recently learned on BYC. I have two BR hens, two golden comets, and one SLW. The daddy was a black cochin and maran cross ... An EE I understand..beautiful boy. So, if the BRs were the moms, does that mean that any chicks that have had any kind of bar pattern, no matter how little or faint the coloring/shading is, is going to be a roo? Thanks for any thoughts. I'm new here and love this site!

I would wait and see!!!!!

much too early to be disappointed

Thank you so much for responding! First post....first response! Still trying to figure out how to navigate on here...lol. Thanks again.:D

Chicks that had a white spot on their heads at hatch should be roosters. It may be hard to tell the barring from a barred rock momma vs a splotchy pattern from your slw momma. If you can post pics we can help.

And your roo is not an easter egger. A marans/cochin mix is just that--a mix. I'll bet he's absolutely beautiful!

Okay, looked at your profile and you've got a fair amount of roos. The first two pics are the same bird? Pullet. the next two pics, the barred bird is a cockeral. the two white birds with red on the wings are roosters. the next 4 pics, a reddish bird, looks like a rooster. The grey bird I'm unsure on but leaning toward cockeral from the comb. The next pics, the drab brown bird is a hen. Then the white and red cockeral, then the white/off white bird I can't say for sure but am leaning toward pullet. the last bird is a pullet.
