I think i'm going to have to say "Good bye" to my ducks :(

Feed around here runs $15 to $17 per 50 lb bag here in Montana. I suspect SD is the same way. I've been mixing feed with other grains and may have to seriously consider mixing my own to get the price down. Corn is EXPENSIVE thanks to ethanol. The other grains aren't cheap for the same reason.

I feel for you. Red Rooster. I'm thinning out my flock before winter.

I know the feeling. At one point I was 125 Breeder Muscovys and am only keeping 45 this year.. Also used to have over 100 other ducks not have 30.. I hate having to get rid of birds but the only way I can keep them. Feed keeps going up..

I am so sad to hear so many are giving up or having to down size their flocks. It's a bummer that feed has gone up so high. I have been mixing 100 lbs. of FR to 50lbs of 7 way scratch to keep my feed cost down some. And they are still eating it up fast. and I have been getting coupons from Purina which really doesn't help much.

my flock free ranges all day but with winter coming feed will be consumed at a faster rate. I am so bummed by this, I love my birds and hope we don't have to consider downsizing also. although we do have a few roos we still have to butcher. So sorry to those that are having to give up their ducks. I hope you can find good homes for them.

so sorry

not good for ducks to be alone, and if they aren't already bonded with your chickens, they probably won't.

$10-17 a bag here in SW MO... depends on what you're buying. still better than it was in So. Cal... not to mention that stuff grows here so they can forage for more of it.

but still... OUCH.

Yeaa, need to have 2 ducks or none. Mine were raised with chicks, and they like them, but not the way they like each other. The ducks are really inseperable.

I paid $21 for my last bag of feed...it was $17 three weeks before.

Darned expensive for eggs...at just one per day. $10 a dozen) But I keep telling myself, I get much more out of having ducks than eggs - MUCH MORE. But if feed goes up much more, my drakes (three) that I keep for personalities only, may have to go. My other two hens have not started laying yet, wish they would hurry~!

Sorry to hear that you'll have to get rid of your ducks.

However, I hope you will be more conscious of the responsibilities that come with caring for an animal in the future.
