Geese do not need to eat meat in order to get protein. Flock Raiser and Layena use 100% plant protein, no animal products at all, same as all commercial poultry feed.


Like I said, commercial feed uses plant protein and are strictly vegetarian. Plants have protein, and herbivores the world over seem to do just fine without preying on other animals.

I raise Embdens, Americans, Africans, and Chinese geese. None of them fish in my pond, they leave the fishing to the ducks. They dive with their feet in the air to eat aquatic plants. Suggesting that a person needs fish, or some other animal product, to raise healthy geese is just fallacious.

I feed Flock Raiser to all my flock but I also feed dried meal worms as an afternoon treat, my Toulouse goose loves them my Embden gander won't touch them.

Peas my ducks love geese nah won't eat them, kale, collards, lettuce yep they will eat. I haven't bought a water melon yet they are so expensive. and waiting for USA grapes.

I raise White Chinese and Brown African's. Love those little babies when they hatch! I just want to love them, pet them and name them George! LOL! Anyway.... All of my geese forage for weeds and grass and eat scratch grains and layer pellets. All of them seem to do great with that, even my ducks! I did have one duckling seize up on me one time and that was when the only feed store in town was out of regular chick started so I bought the medicated. I didn't know that feeding the medicated would make ducks seize. It was scary! Needless to say I have not bought anymore medicated.

I suggest you re-read my post, perhaps, since you've accused me of suggesting something 'fallacious' I did not even say. I did not suggest geese must have animal protein to be healthy or obtain protein. Suggesting geese do not eat animal protein at all, however, is fallacious.

I said: I have eaten geese raised on meat meal pellets and geese who ate fish of their own accord and I did not care to repeat the consumption of meat meal fed geese.

Also I referred to the feeds used in my country, not yours, and allowed for the difference, whereas you've just stated a generalization of 'commercial feeds do not contain meat'... Over here they do, and I've talked to various Americans on these forums who add meatmeal or fishmeal to their poultry feeds.

The breeds of geese vary hugely and are not even descended from just one species. It is natural for some of them to eat fish for some parts of their lifespan, particularly during infancy and breeding. Many herbivorous animals temporarily partially defy that classification at those times. Just like dogs, chooks and cats, you can indeed raise animals that normally eat meat on just vegetarian foods but I don't believe that's the best for them. For some geese it is, and is natural. For others it's not.

Not all geese breeds are the same because as I keep saying, they were not descended from just one species. Since you don't have pilgrims and seem to think I'm confusing them with ducks, I suggest you look into them. They're ok, not the best, but they are in fact geese. I've also had Embden, Chinese, and Toulouse mixes. I've never owned ducks.

Edited, because there's no point me replying in an irritated manner to someone stating fallacious generalizations in response to posts of mine they clearly have not even read, and sticking with those half-facts instead of finding out the truth of the matter. You're entitled to your opinion. But if you're going to flatly and rudely reject my opinion as fallacy, perhaps you should do some research first, and have something other than your say-so to refute it. Nobody here is a true expert, there's always more to learn.
