I think I've become a chicken....

How cute!! It's so sweet when they trust you enough to fall asleep on your lap.

The beak wiping might be part of a bedtime ritual too. My girls all do it on the lower perch before hopping up onto and settling in on the upper perch for the night. So interesting! Enjoy your little friend!

I love it when one of my girls wants some snuggle time! Gizmos is a pretty and very sweet girl! Hope you can find her a nice feathered friend soon! Thanks for sharing!

Interesting! Bedtime ritual! I hadn't thought of that. This morning she hopped up on me b/c she wanted more of the muffin I was eating and didn't believe that it really was all gone. (That was the first time she did this during the day. )She found a couple of tiny crumbs on my shirt and hopped down. I don't think she did the beak wiping thing at that time, so I think you may be right. I'll have to watch that!

Heehee what a cute mental image!

A lot of bird species do the beak-wiping to indicate territory, and a LOT of them do it as part of a mating ritual. I think it's their way of looking impressive.

Maybe she's saying "Arn't I the prettiest thing in the world? I deserve lap cuddles"

That is so sweet. I have a hen just like that. I just love it.

Lol your chicken sounds like my spoiled rotten hen Honey Bun! When Honey Bun's pecking around in her playpen outside(she is kind of agressive, so my other chickens stay in a different pen outside except they live in it, not play in it) and I get in there with her and sit down, she will run up to me, plop down in my lap, cluck (I cluck a little bit to her) and she will just sit there preening her feathers. She only rubs her beak on me after she gets it dirty though

. I think your chicken might rub its beak on you to show affection, or maybe it wants to eat you... Jklol

All-right, well I got all inspired, didn't I? Tonight I sat with my two little bantam cochins while they put themselves to bed. One of them started almost crying, and making the strangest noises. She jumped up next to me. I thought, aha! She will sit on my lap and purr! So I helped things along by putting her on my lap...she wiped her beak on my lap...and then she rewarded me with a big poop!

I won't do that again! You are so lucky with your sweet hen.

What's interesting is that Gizmos is voted #1 chicken to poop on me and I swear she can do it at will if I've taken her away from something she was especially enjoying, like a dust bath. That said, if she gets into my lap by choice, she NEVER poops on me. Really, she has never done it. Okay, I can feel it in my chest: I just cursed myself with that. (Note to self: Wear old clothes tomorrow.)

I think they can poop at will, for sure. My little Leia was at the end of a long battle with chronic respiratory disease (which I beat!

) and I think she wanted to express her dislike of having her sinuses cleaned out twice a day.

Have you got Gizmos a new friend yet? I loved your video.

Aw, thanks for the video compliment. Yes! I ended up getting two chicks: an ameracauna (Golda) and a Delaware (Fayge). After four weeks of chicken bootcamp, they are now staying in the coop with her. She has completely stopped trying to peck them although she gives an occasional warning peck (without contact) if they step out of line. They sleep huddled in a corner of the coop because she won't share her perch, but I'm hoping that's okay until they get bigger. Not sure if it would be better to keep them isolated until they can hold their own or if it's best that they stay integrated with her since she's really not interested in hurting them. (She just stares them down so that they get in the corner to sleep- as if she's used to her king sized bed now and will not share it with anyone!)
