Hello. I think my chicken has sour crop. She started to exhibit symptoms yesterday. I went on YouTube looked at some videos, tilted her head down and started massaging her crop and a lot of liquid came out. Only problem is, it started to come out of her nostrils too. Now I fear it's in her lungs. I can hear gurgling when she breathes. She is not eating or drinking anything, although last night after I drained her crop, she did scarf down a beetle like there was no tomorrow. Today I got out just as much as I did yesterday, if not more this time I did not tilt her head down and it still came out of her nose (and beak). I don't understand how it can fill up that fast if she's not eating or drinking?? It was a huge amount of brownish greenish liquid, I did not see any chunks of anything in it. It looked like about 4-5 Oz just this morning alone. Coming out of her nostrils concerns me though, is she doomed? I'm hesitant to try to hydrate her, I don't know if it's going directly to her lungs at this point. This is my first time ever dealing with this, I don't know if I'm doing it right. Please help my Mabel.

It's not advisable to make your hen vomit the fluid from her crop for the very reason you fear. So I would quit doing that.

Is there a bad odor coming from her, sour and putrid? This is often associated with sour crop. What does her crop feel like? Is it uniformly soft and squishy like a water balloon? Or is it firm and hard? Does it empty at all over night or is it full come morning?

What does her crop look like from the outside? Can you see it? Is it a big bulge? Does it hang down lower than the other hens? Does it swing back and forth when she walks?

What has she been eating over the past few days? Has she been grazing on grass that has stiff stems? Have you noticed her spending a lot of time eating growing plants? If so, what are they?

How about treats? Has she been getting a lot of starchy stuff like bread crusts or corn bread?

What does her poop look like? Is she the only one acting sick? Have you noticed any unusual poop from this hen or any of the others?

Her crop feels like a squishy water ballon. Its noticeably bigger than the other hens. Im pretty sure i got it empty last night but this morning it was full again. And it was right before she went in for the night so i know she didn't eat or drink anything after i did it, except for that one beetle. And yes it smells putrid.
