I was looking at my chickens tonight and noticed this white stuff at the base of their feathers. I then saw these cream colored bugs running in all directions... I think they were lice!

How do I get rid of them and where can I find it??

TIA

Yepsounds like lice, get some lice spray from your local feed store or pet shop. Spray the birds and the cop really good. Mine have had lice once and after just on application of the spray the lice were gone. Good Luck

You can use 5% Seven dust, often found in garden supply sections of stores, or in feed or hardware stores, or WalMart. You can also use "poultry dust" n the birds, which is usually either permethrin or a permethrin/pyrethrin combination, probably a less harsh insecticide than Seven (which is carbaryl.) Found at the feed stores around here.

Many feel DE controls populations, but it is not good enough when you know you have an infestation.

Adams' Flea and Tick Spray is another permithrin/pyrethrin formulation. You should be able to pick it up at WalMart. I like it because I can treat the roosts and other places in the coop with it that have those cute little cracks and crevices where some species of mites and lice hide during the day.

Thank you all so much.. I have found some at the local TSC and will be picking up some asap. I also read on how to apply it.. any suggestions from those that have used it??

Thanks again!
Crystal

I bought 4 chickens from a neighbor and found those same lice on them. You probably just bought the same can of dust I bought at TSC. After one app, they were gone and never came back. I keep checking my chickens for more, but I never find any.

It's good stuff!

I had a bad lice/mite problem back in spring. Got WAY out of control before I noticed it.

I mixed Seven Dust with DE (food grade) poweder; mostly cause Sevin is hard to find in large quantities and I had 30 birds to dust.

WORKED!!!! Two weeks later, I treated again (tagged the worst of my flock when I dusted the first time so I could mark the difference) and all the eggs were powdery dry and no bugs at all.

Now I dust monthly just to make sure my birds don't get like that again.
