Yesterday my female layed an egg as she does everyday so I removed it from the cage. Later that day I go to check on them and there is another egg! Today the same thing happened, this morning when I put them outside there was an egg in the cage so I just left it in there and about an hour later I go back and she had made a big pile with the shavings and had layed an egg in the nest. Then she kinda destroyed the nest and scattered the two eggs all over the pen. Is she trying to go broody, or is she just a super duper egg layer? Thanks for your help!

Question -- do you have just the one female? Because in my experience with birds (but I'm totally new to button quail) they don't lay more than one egg in 24 hours?

But yes, the act of starting a nest sounds like she might have some inate maternal qualities. As to why it was later destroyed, probably not an intentional act, just perhaps accidental -- maybe the other bird or birds in with her did it -- I know when my Rouen hen tried to sit on her nest this spring, the drakes really didn't care and would trample over her and it in their antics -- she was always threatening them to stay away but it didn't always happen.

If your getting 2 eggs a day and this continues, I would question the sex of the roo... maybe it's a hen too!! Most every bird I've seen will not lay more than one egg a day. Every once in a while, one will lay 2 eggs in one day and go back to laying one a day.
