I think my quails got Marek's from my chickens

It was once rare in chickens...right?
I think it is said to be rare in quail but quail can get it.

@007Sean I have a few articles bookmarked on my computer. I'm running the streets this morning, when I get back home I'll link them here. I can't remember off hand if they too are about quail being injected or not.

Yeah, I have Marek's Vet Manual. And it mentions that chicken and turkeys can be infected but it states that other mammals and birds are refractory to infection. Which means they either don't respond to treatment or are not affected by the infection. That is what I'm trying to find out...are Japanese quail affected/infected by a natural contraction of MD, it's obvious they can be infected by injection of the virus. I couldn't find any case studies being conducted on Japanese quail and natural contraction of the disease.

Oops, in my speed reading I passed right over that, it does say quail can get it naturally. End of discussion! but would still like to see case studies and how they conducted them.

Were your cots living in direct contact with your chickens? It sounds more like MG. When you hatch chicks from this group do the chicks live long or are sickly? Did you loose chicks from these parents?
Ca right now is experiencing New Castle. I don't know much about that disease but since your in Ca I'd read up on it. Newcastle is contagious to humans.

No the only contact would have been through air. I keep the quails in a rabbit cage with pine shavings so dust probably sticks easily. Eevery chick that hatched by itself lived until now. The eggs came from craigslist so I don't know about the parents. But the affected quails were a golden, A&M, and tuxedo, so they had different parents.

What is MG? I don't think it's New Castle based on where I live...

Another possibility is that the quails were born with a virus, and then gave it to the chickens? I put quail litter in the compost pile where the chickens hang out and also feed the quail eggs to chickens sometimes. I don't know if there are any diseases that spread that way.
