Hi all I have a silkie who seems to be eating a lot of mud! Which is then causing runny poops it's like she's looking for something in the mud, this happend before just after she started laying but then she went broody and it's seem to stop when she finished brooding but now she's laying again and searching the mud again :( I must say I lost a silkie last year who started with the same symptoms but just lost so much wait and the poop was just running out if her when u picked her up poor thing but when I took her to the vets she just put her to sleep and said it was too late :( I don't want to lose kandi too,is there anyone else that has experienced this type of behaviour and can give any advice please she has been wormed.

id say that MAYBE she was already sick, she knows she is sick and is tying to cure herself with the minerals in the mud like clay might help sicknesses. if she isn't free ranging, go dig her a great big plug of grass with dirt and worms. Big enough or get pieces and put them together so she also roll in it.

Your chicken may need a good supplement that contains vitamins, trace minerals, and amino acids--brands such as Poultry Nutridrench or Rooster Booster Poultry Cell are popular in the US, but I'm sure there are some available in the UK. I would recommend using it 2-3 times a week at first to see if it makes a difference. I would also recommend some probiotics for occasional use. Diarrhea is not normal, and worms, enteritis, and coccidiosis can be causes of chronic diarrhea. Flubenvet is a good wormer to use in the UK. Here is a link for a supplement that may be available to you: http://www.chicken-house.co.uk/acatalog/Country_Living_Vital_Vits_250ml.html

Yes ok thank you guys I was thinking it was a vitamin/mineral thing so have brought a neutritional tonic thing that you add to the water which helps them absorb the vitamins properly and a poultry spice mix which you add to the food which contains vits so hopefully these will help her find what she's looking for and yes flubenvet is what I use, thanks for the advice :)
