I think she is trying to communicate with us

My little Black Australorp seems to have taken over the role of "head chicken" now that my flock is rooster less. She is a talkative girl, except when she lays, then not a peep.
All other times she is talking about something.

I swear she was concerned about the roof and walls of the coop. She had been yacking pretty frantically at me and looking at them and jumping from the roost to the floor. Going to the corner, cocking her head to look at the ceiling. And then the wall and then jumping back up on the roost. Talking about "it" all the time. And no9t in that soft clucking they do. But in a hurried and concerned way. KWIM???

Now. I would normally shake it off as "silly chicken" But during the ice storm a few weeks ago a large branch fell on the corner of the roof and popped the seams of the walls and such. Right in the area she is "talking" to me about. And she had done this every time I went out there. *I had brought the girls into the mudroom for the time I was without electricity, since I couldnt fix it without power tools. But we fixed it first thing. And fixed it well.

I told her it was fixed and picked her up to show her. And I swear she is calm about it now. No yacking at me and hopping around. I really think she was concerned about it and was telling me she didnt feel safe. And yes, my dh thinks I am NUTS.

I truly think that chickens are just as smart as dogs and cats.
Or maybe I now have Cinderella syndrome completely and need to be medicated heavily.

Yeah, we have. It's been a rough winter already> I am dreading the rest of it.
But. We now have two cages big enough for all 5 girls. Just in case I need to move them into the basement during a bad storm. Or hide them from mean and stupid "chicken's cant be pets" people

That was a cute story. I think your chicken was talking to you, knowing she would eventually get your attention. And once you showed her there was nothing to worry about, she calmed down. No doubt there was a communication going on.

We people just need to 'listen' better.
