i think this is to pricey for a chick

I prefered breeders over hatchery until one of those breeders sold me chicks with Marek's. All the birds I purchased were SQ and I paid the price per chick plus the price of losing 35+ birds to Marek's. Breeders are wonderful until you get one that doesn't want to admit that they have a problem and pass it on to others. I was building my flock for being able to show and have my kids do 4H...all that is history now. We will never be able to do either.

That's terrible. I'm sure things happen on accident, but admitting you caused the problem will go a long way. So sorry you lost your flock. I honestly don't know a ton about Marek's. Will you never be able to keep birds again because of it? I know the hatcheries and some breeders vaccinate all their chicks for it. Would this not help?

Now I'm curious and I am going to go and try to learn more about it

I can have more birds as long as they are hatched here and vaccinated or bought vaccinated. Since most private breeders don't vaccinate my options of getting really nice birds is next to nil. Right now, I have hatched some of my flocks' eggs and they are thriving. I purchased vaccinated pullets this spring and I've lost 3 out of 9 and two more are showing signs of illness or heat...oh how I hope it's heat!
