Hello to all I am a new member to BYC but I have been reading for months and I have found lots of helpful information. But now I have a start of a few questions. I have three ladies whom I thought were Barred Rocks but after trying to find out some info on my new chicks I am questioning that. They are atleast two years old and laying the largest eggs I have ever seen but they are lacking the distinct gray on the legs. Which is also making it hard to sex my new Barred babies. Any help would be appreciated. MY rooster who wears the puffiest pants ever is also barred and not sure on him either, and he is a very large rooster but very docile towards me but does a good job doing his job. Even if he is still regrowing his rooster tail feathers.

They certainly look like Barred Rocks to me - they should have yellow legs, although the young pullets' legs often are darker on the front, and I have seen leg color fade as they age. I'm not sure what you mean by "distinct gray on the legs." I'm glad they're laying so well for you - and good on Mr. Roo for being such a fine boy. Barred Rocks are my favorite!

Okay thanks I didn't know the coloring on their legs fades with age on the BR. They are some of my favorites besides by EE Sam. And I couldn't ask for a better rooster, and even his favorite is another BR hen who is sadly to say looking a little bit picked on, I need to get her an apron.

Colonel and his girls.

I LOVE your roo! He is so round he looks fake!
I had to get the saddles for my BRs too. One girl that we call Dumpy took 6 months to grow all her feathers back, but the saddle really helped!

Thanks HappyMnt. He is a really big rooster, but he's a very good guy,
not mean or aggressive to me but very protective of his girls.
His legs are like tree trunks.

when he has all of his feathers he's very handsome too.
If he would only leave his favorite girls lone.
I hate to seperate her or cage her so I think
a saddle might be my only other option.
