I thought chickens loved pumpkins?

I have figured out with mine that freshness is an issue. Cut from the vine sectioned and put into the coop, they go nuts for pumpkin, zuccini or squash. If I cut it and dont give it to them for a couple days or more, they will half heartedly eat some, but leave the bulk of it untouched. I will have to try baking it for a few minutes.

Mine love the seeds and they love cooked squash and pumpkin, I have never tried raw since they only get leftovers and we don't eat it raw.

The Tinman, I love your scenery! and the Jersey girls (and boy) they are gorgeous!

My flock will pick at the pumpkin, but I haven't seen them go crazy over it yet. However they are eating, just very slowly. Maybe they will have to get used to it being in the coop. They can scare over the easiest things.

My chickens DESTROYED the pumpkins I have given them. They weren't interested until I broke them by dropping them, but once inside, it was a pumpkin eating festival! Nothing but seeds, orange stuff and feathers flying everywhere. The first one, they even ate the rind, the second, they left a little rind like they do watermelons. Hilarious!

Have not offered pumpkins (hoping to get some at a good price now that Halloween is past) BUT they do love Winter Squash from the garden. They attack it like there is no tomorrow and all that is left is small pieces of rind. So far I have not given my girls anything they refused to eat. This week I have been cutting down basil plants and taking the limbs into the run for them. They strip them clean, even the blooms and seeds. Hoping it does not make the eggs taste strange. Also cut down one of the Chile Petin plants and gave them the peppers and leaves...not a single piece of green left.

ETA: And they eat all the veggies raw...no cooking needed...only thing cooked are leftovers when I clean the frig.

Mine LOVE pumpkin. IT took them a while to get the idea of it but within 4 hours it was GONE.. now
I know where to put the kiddies pumpkins and not have the $$$$ wasted.. In the coop the pumpkins will go today.

My daughter was the same way! how funny. I personally refuse to cook food specifically for my chickens, but I do give them every bit of leftovers I can find. My chickens gobbled up the soft slimy pumpkin guts and seeds. They loved it!

I cut big holes in the side of a pumpkin and gave it to the girls. They went nuts. It was really cute to see nine little butts sticking out of the pumpkin as they all stuck their heads in all at once. I am expecting it to be almost if not completely gone by the time I go out in the morning. They are so cute!
