I threw a copperhead snake to the chickens-was I wrong?

I'm pretty sure that if you've been moved by God to "take up serpents," then you wouldn't be throwing it to chickens--just a guess! LOL But yeah, I probably wouldn't be touching a copperhead even if it wouldn't harm my chickens. Must have been neat to watch, though!

Oh good grief not in a meeeeelllion years! I'd be yucked over what my eggs would taste like and even more yucked to find any remains of the snake in the pen. I probably wouldn't go close enough to feed my hens if there were snake remains in the pen...venemous or not!

Actually that is one of the best ways to dispatch a copperhead.
I am a snake lover BUT! I advise dispatching anything that can harm people as the venomious ones can. Especially where as they hide and have a tendency to strike before you know they are there.

Baby snakes are much more dangerous than the larger older counterparts, reason being they can hit many more times and seem to have an endless supply of venom.
adults will stop after a bite or two , babys do not have that control and will strike repeatedly.

snakes getting into a chicken coop in the daylight is totally hysterical. sucks to be them in other words. They should have stayed out, got what they deserved, Plus you got a little entertainment.

A snake, no matter what kind, would have a heck of hard time biting a chicken. So, throwing that snake in with the chickens was okay, in my humble opinion. Talking about entertainment, have you ever seen a chicken go after a mouse? Chickens like to kill mice, too.

I wish mine would kill our mouse population before the snakes come slithering in. I really could care less for snakes and to keep a copperhead in a cage, is in my opinion, CRAZY. But I have a fear of snakes. I won't run from one if I see it. I will do what I can to kill it. In my yard one woulnd't have to go far to find a weapon. Bricks, Boards, rocks and there is usually some kind of yard tool around somewhere. And with dogs it wouldn't go far. I would call the dogs and they would hold it at bay so I coud go and get someting.

About 11 years ago my husband dragged the garbage cans from the curb to where they belong and under them where a bunch of Black Racers all couled up together. It startled him and he came in to tell me about it. I calmly got up and went outside and got on the riding mower and fired it up and kindly took a stroll to where they where and proceeded to make snake burger out of the bunch. He just stood there and laughed at me.

If I know its there, it has to go. Once we had a chicken snake in our house and it had to be there about 3 days before it was found. It was over 6' long and stuck in the window airconditioner cover trying to get out. My husband told me to grab its tail and pull it out. Yeah, hes crazy. I've never toutched a snake in my life and never plan to. I went to get the limg trimmers and he cut off its head and outside it went. I moved a week later.

ok...on this i have to throw my 2 cents in...a couple of weeks ago, my dh & i were sitting by our run watching the 2 big girls

enjoying the show when all of a sudden they were fighting over what we thought was a "worm", turned out it wasnt, it was a baby snake. ok no problem
idunno.gif
we thought, by the time the hour was over......they had eaten 6 (yes i said 6)
ep.gif
baby snakes, i was panicking bad. i was online here looking up all i could
caf.gif
(needless to say was a long night) but came next morning.......i had 2 (one from each) huge double yoke eggs and they were both ok

so now, anytime we find a baby snake, we toss it in there for them even though i think that's just gross

but obviously they enjoy it.

Usually when there is one baby snake there will be more.......so I would bet your chickens will get more snake snacks! Make sure you grab your camera next time.

LOL

I personally try to kill any snakes that I feed to the chickens or pigs, but wouldnt worry about it.

And I have been caught unaware (as have my kids and husband) by snakes and we step on them. Grinding in our heal on their head.

my kids are always bringing me home a snake to identify that they have killed this way-- and I can tell NOTHING about their heads...

anyway, chickens LOVE snakes, mice and such, and might be like some other animals and have a natural resistance to the venom. Many animals do.

Think about it, owls, hawks, and other birds of prey eat snakes all the time and noone ever kills them for them.

I found a dead snake that still looked like it was alive the other day. I put it in the pen thinking my chickens would have fun pecking and tearing it apart. The next thing I knew the snake was laying outside the pen. Im guessing the chickens did not like having this "visitor."
