I took the plunge today and bought three chicks!!!!

Thank you. Yes, I've seen that method in several videos on YouTube and I decided that's the best way. Also, chicken wire is to keep chickens IN, not to keep preditors out! I'm going with hardware cloth. Oh, and a covered run, at least with hardware cloth. The coop will sit under a huge maple tree so there will be shade in the summer. I want the coop raised up 18" to 24" as well to thwart rodents and snakes.

I thought of that too, especially since she's borrowed a few from me in the past! LOL!!! These will be much better than store bought, too!

I knew there was something wrong the way the flock was acting.....I kept looking around.....saw a large snake.....I spend a lot of time watching my chickens so I know what is normal behavior.

I hope to put in an automatic pop door on a timer and a dim light the same way. That would make it much easier. I'm handicapped anyway (neuropathy), so the more help the better. I'll have just a few steps to go up and down to get to them, but some mornings it's all I can do to crawl out of bed. I want hubby to make automatic waterers using pvc and nipples, also automatic feeders the same way so that it only has to be done every couple of days. I'll still want to check for eggs every day though. I'll be able to see it all out my dining room and kitchen windows, so that will be convenient. In the summer I'll sit on the adult swing and enjoy watching something much better than just traffic going by! LOL!

Yep, 24/7 the lamp stays on. Lower the heat by 5 degrees until they are 6 weeks old.

Enjoy your new babies and it is great to have you aboard!
