What a mess.

So.................do we get to see pictures of the adorables?

Sorry that teacher was such a loser. We do a hatching program at my school...guess who's the "go to chicken girl?"
I've taken two chickens that have hatched from our brooders and they have both died. They were born with serious issues. The science lady was like, "I know we have to get those brooders fixed...." Ugh.
The kids love to see the chickens, though. They ask me about mine all the time. Most of my kids live in gov't housing, so a live chicken is definitely a novelty.

I completely agree. If you put in a complaint to the principal, that will be more effective in preventing a teacher from making the same mistake again. I wouldn't want to stop it from being a possibility, since it can be a wonderful learning experience for the students, but teachers need to show that it has been thought out completely in their lesson plans. The last thing we need is for students to get the idea that you can take on the responsibility of a living creature and then fail to do so properly.

I never have conducted a hatching experience in my classroom, mostly because it's not a part of my grade level's standards. However, if I were to take on such a task, I would be researching it thoroughly like I did when I adopted a puppy. If I'm not going to be able to keep the grown animal at my home or have a home set in place for the animal once the classroom experience is over, or have the proper care in place before the eggs hatched, then it's not going to happen.

I don't blame you for wanting to rant about that. It'd tick me off something fierce if someone asked me to supply the eggs and didn't put some forethought into the care of the living things that they helped bring into the world.

Afraid I'd be reporting that teacher to the district. That is NOT cool at all. Not the way she handled any of it, including the fact that she gave your home number, name, and who knows what other info out to a perfect stranger. If she's that... loose... with your info makes me worry what info of mine (if my kid was in her class) she'd be doling out to just any ol' person.

The school/district needs to make sure that teacher (not all teachers, just THAT one who has proven herself incapable of handling the responsibility of young lives, just blows it off) doesn't get permission to do this project again.

Wonder what she told her kids happened to the ducklings anyways?

I couldn't agree more...
That is why I stated that I would take them with me... I would never do this without knowing how to care for them...
Heck... my project at school has been honeybees... because my son wants a hive... we studied bees in class for the entire year and I am just NOW thinking I may know enough for him to have a successful hive.

Live animals... whether insects, birds, mammals... should be thoroughly planned for and researched.

I would make sure the principal knows, but find a tactful way to not ruin it for the teachers that will do it responsibly....

I would have to report her to the powers that be for her sheer lack of common sense and lack of planning on taking care of living creatures. How irresponsible can a person educating the youth of today possibly be. Four days old and dog food? I am new at this and I have my first chickens but I had the good sense to plan it out over a years time. I still don't think I am completely prepared but I would certainly learn BEFOREHAND what is required to maintain life of a newly hatched chick. Wow....you are a good person to take them back and provide for their well being after the poor things had to deal with outright stupidity. I will say thank you....thank you for being a decent human being!
