You sure that's not lamas you hear down the road? Growing up our neighbors lamas used to creep us out at night... They sound like crying infants! Really awkward!
Oh, I don't mind the sound. It doesn't sound like a scream to me though it is loud. I think if I had lots of land I would be more concerned about how difficult they may be to care for and if its possible for them to be friendly etc, than the calls they make.
First time I heard one was at Warwick Castle -- I was walking outside the garden hedge and a peacock right on the other side of the hedge screamed. Couldn't see it, didn't know what it was, and just about peed myself. That said, if we had enough space that they wouldn't bother our neighbors, I would have some.

How many creepy sounding pets are there??? I wonder if I could get a couple and hide them around till all the neigbors get spooked then move, I could buy some more land around me real cheap and continue on my farm adventures!!
Just the other day we were driving down a road in our town when we past a farm. There had to be about 15 peacocks sitting on the railing of the front porch all screaming at the same time. I wonder how those people sleep through that? My son was a little freaked out in the back seat too.
