hi. i would really like to have some chickens that will most likely go broody. i want to have the experience of watching a hen raise some babiesand it would be a lot easier on me. what breed should i get? i heard cochins were good but i was just not sure. i need something that can stand a little bit of heat too after all i am in florida.

How wet and cold are your winters?
I would suggest Silkies, pekins or bantam cochins. they are all great mums and will go broody at least once a year ( silkies more so) they will raise their flock and protect them by all means

I agree with Stiggy. Silkies are probably the best mothers, although Cochins are very good as well. We have had both Black Silkies and Buff Cochins and both breeds hatched and raised a number of broods.

Silkies are the most reliable at going and staying broody, but they have generally poor eye sight compared to other breeds and don't get my vote for best mothers after the eggs are hatched. For a few chicks as a time, the game bantams are probably the best possible mothers. For larger hens and larger broods, I hear orpingtons and marans are good broodies. Any of the non-Mediteranian breeds will go broody as they get older, but it's an individual thing.

If I wanted to get a single hen and have her raise chicks, I'd find a farmer and buy a hen that was a proven broody, regardless of breed. Get a matching roo if you can and give her a nice nest with some fake eggs.

okay. i really want to get cochins. it doesnt get very cold down here and i only gets really wet during the rainy season. and i have multiple coops that dont really get wet.my coops are mostly open except one wich is an A-frame coop

If you really want Cochins, then get Cochins. You will be happy with them.

I had one Silkie called Cherry who went broody 3 times in one season. We only let her raise 2 broods though as we decided she needed a rest from babies
