i want a broody-type chicken,What breed should i get?

I heard a lot of great things about broody orpingtons but my orpington has not once gone broody. I have an EE who goes broody often so I decided to giver her some fertile eggs because it wasn't worth the trouble of spending three weeks breaking her. I also have a wyandotte who goes broody. Cochin is a good breed but I would stick to the bantams cochin rather than the standard as the standard can get really clumsy and step on the babies. Brahmas are also known for going broody but are so large they also tend to crush the babies because of clumsiness. It depends on the breed and then on the hen herself. Good Luck

I agree, anything heavy breed tends to accidentally squash their babies. It got to the point where we would let them sit but have to take away their babies because they just kept crushing them. that's why light breeds and Bantams are much better for brooding, and they seem to be less clumsy as well

okay. i have 8 silver pheonix that i hatched. would they be good broodys? 5 are hens and 3 are roosters

I've never had Phoenix chickens so I wouldn't know but I hope to get some one day, they are so pretty.

I have never had Phoenix so I cannot speak from personal experience, but based on what I have read and heard about them, they are not particularly broody, but do make protective mothers when they do hatch chicks. Maybe some other member at BYC has had them and can speak from personal experience. How about it, guys?

yes,if someone knows about phoenix,please let me know! the parents were both show chickens that i bought and the mother was sitting on six eggs.then she got loose and would sit on the eggs again.i bought and incubator and 4 hatched. 3 of them were killed by a chicken hawk and i know have the weirdest little chicken. then i got about 20 more eggs out of the breeding pair before i gave them away due to me having to leave for a few months
