I want some STANDARDS!!!

The meanest chickens I ever had were RIR. Currently I have BC Marans, Buff Orpingtons, and Black Australorps. My Aussies are by far the friendliest, most reliable layers and biggest eggs. My Orpingtons are sweet, but a little more aloof and their eggs are definately smaller. The Aussies will actually coming running to me from across the yard for treats. They each give me a nice large egg almost every day. Then I've only had my Marans a few days. They aren't laying yet.

My light brahma is the sweetest thing ever.

Australorps are supposed to be one of the best layers, and docile too.

We have a mixed flock and the most laid backed ones are the Golden Comets, in fact next year this time they and the Jersey Giants are likely to be the only ones we will have.

The Jersey giants are also extremely laid back however with smaller birds they might be just too big.

This first year was a trial year, next spring we will add Golden Comets.

We got chickens to have a relaxing hobby and few eggs.

I have EE, WR, RIR, and one orp hen. I had a few australorps and a two golden comets. From personal experience one of the GC was the most friendly and the other was top hen. Actually, my boyfriend and I were sitting on the ground working on the coop and CeeCee (what my daughter had named the GC) flew up and perched on my bf's shoulder. It was pretty funny. It freaked him out.

My first chicks were BA and they are very gentle, I handle them all the time. And when one was broody she let me check her eggs and handle the chikcs and was not mean at all. They lay nice size brown eggs on a regular basis and have been pretty cold hardy. I don't have too much experience with other breeds except EE and they are my wild girls and do not like to be held at all, and lay their eggs in the craziest places. Good Luck

Well White Rocks do NOT go well with other breeds they tend to be mean to the littler ones

if you put chicks under your broody hen then the chicks might not bully your silkies and they will be protected by the mom. Of course there are always those that pick on and those who submit to picking. How they act also depends on their individual personality. I used to have a RIR hen that used to follow me around the yard and preen my hair.

Big egg laying machines with good temperament. That's all I'd have instead of my current batch of BR's BO's EE's NH's GC's

I started with a mixed group of bantams including silkies and the silkies seem to be in the middle of the pack pecking order wise. When my little girls were around 18 weeks old I added two standard birds a red sex link and a EE'er they were both 8 weeks younger. Now some ten weeks later my standards are twice as big as my bantams and both standards are still at the bottom of the order. It can be really funny watching a tiny little chicken trying to keep up with a really big chicken and dishing it out at the same time.

Bantams seem to be real stand up kind of birds. One surprise is my silkies they seem to go out of their way to punish anyone under there status to the point of running all the way across the yard after one of the big girls.
