Help!!! Is this handsome fella just a mutt? Or is there a name for what he is? Can anyone identify what went into the making of this big boy?
Here's the story:
My neighbors down the road purchased him about a year and a half ago or so from the local feed store. Par for the course from those numbskull's, they said the chick was one thing, and he turned out to be something completely different. (who hasn't had that happen, eh?) They even got the gender wrong at the time! HE was supposed to be a SHE !! How typical!
Anyhow, I have no idea what breed name he was supposedly sold under, and poor Dawn didn't know either. And of course, Brandon was not at home when I stopped to pick up two dozen hatching eggs from them today. So, naturally, I couldn't ask him what he recalled of what they touted Mister Mystery Rooster to be.
Brandon and Dawn have offered him to me for adoption as they currently have three roo's in that flock. One RIR, one BR and this guy. For me it's a case of love at first sight, so it's a foregone conclusion that we're going to at least make the attempt to integrate him into our little flock of 8 girls.
His breeding makes not one lick of difference to me. I'd just like to know is all. Hopefully, after a suitable quarantine period, the girls will accept him with open wings, and I'll finally have me a roo in the flock.
If not this guy, then maybe in the 24 eggs that just went into the bator this morning.
Anyhow, take a look and let me know what y'all think. Any ideas?
So, without further ado.....drum roll please!!
.....I give you .....Mister Mystery Roo!
One more shot for good measure:
Oh, and in case you can't really tell it in the pic...he has what I think is called a "strawberry" comb? It's wide and fairly flat to his head. In case that little tidbit of info helps.
