I want to build a brooder.

Okay.. i like the idea of the coop on legs. But how much is the costs? What are the materials needed? Could i put it on wheels? thanks.. PS: I wanted to use sand in my coop.. so maybe no wire?

I'm with those who suggested cardboard. Here's the thread where I first got the idea.

I have a friend who works at Lowe's and he picked up several boxes for me. I made one approximately 55"LX53"WX30"D. It's free except for the duct tape to tape it all together. It's disposable and I won't have to find a place to store it when not in use. Our 15 chicks will hopefully arrive tomorrow. I have a small plastic tote I'll use for the first week or so, then move them into the bigger one.

Okay, just as i was gonna build one.. My parents surprised me with one!! It's really cool.. It has a heat lamp holder, a wire floor with pull-outtable tray for shavings and cleaning.. AND you can remove the wire floor for easy cleaning! I LOVEE IT
Sorry about the mess in my room!!

now you have to start talking about a new coop.

I built a brooder with plywood some 2x3s and chicken wire. It is a bit a elaborate with a thermostat to control the bulb but has a bit of a run off to the side so they can escape the heat. I keep it insulated with felt fabric on the openings. I plan on using it as a quail coop as soon as everything hatches. Any questions let me know.

I'm on the 2nd batch of chicks in a brooder I got on Craig's list. The guy built it himself... nothing fancy at all... just 4 wood sides about 3 ft tall and a bottom set on some wood blocks. He gave it away for free. It's about 3x4... works great and very simple. I put chicken wire over the top so they can't jump out. I have it in the garage and hung the heat lamp from a rope on a pulley thing on the ceiling that I raise and lower depending on how hot I want it to be. On one side we made a little roost and put a couple 2x4s on it, so they can hide under it if they want or sit on top.
