I want to order a pair of geese, new to geese here

What? I have several pairs and trios. I was referring to the original poster talking about keeping 1. Serina Harvey can pinion their wings? didn't know that.

Oh, sorry - I got mixed up about who was wanting a single goose. LOL Yes, Serina did or was offering pinioned goslings one year. I declined to have mine pinioned, they only fly around At low altitudes. LOL

So do yours fly around then any? I clipped all mine's wings after one goose flew around above their pen in a large circle about 20 feet off the ground. I am curious how well they fly without their wings clipped and full grown. Good luck with your hatching in the upcoming year, mine are just starting to breed today!

Mine fly around, but usually its 6feet or lower and about 30 feet in distance, maximum. My yard is fenced with a solid 6 foot fence, and none have gone over. However, once when we had the gate open, 2 of my geese walked out and went down the street to a neighbors to eat grass. I am still amazed that they were not hit by cars!

Read this thread with interest as I have found purebred Chinese eggs locally and am considering them as my first geese.

I see no one recommended them, why would that be? Are they know to be aggressive?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Uh, yup - Chinese geese can be quite aggressive. I have never owned any, for that reason. Two other folks I know have or have had Chinese - out of seven I've met (Chinese geese), not a single one wasn't very snappy and aggressive. But that's only my experience and a number of geese.

I looked at two pairs of one and a half yr old white chinese this past week, this old guy had to get rid ofthem because he lives within city limits and his neighbors complained about their loud noise. He had a citation and a time limit to get rid of them, he is selling them for 50 dollars each or a pair for 75 dollars ,sad:(0 . When I went to meet them, of course the guy kept saying it takes a while for them to get to know you, but even with him there, I was out of that yard, behind the gate by NO CHOICE OF MY OWN in two minutes. Actually cant remember when I was that scare of a dog chasing me. these two pairs seemed very agressive and were LOUD.

I'm sure it wasn't funny to you, but I did get a giggle out of that.

Okay, question answered - No Chinese for me. Thanks folks!

I have brown chinese and the females are not aggressive at all. Mine were hand raised after incubating last spring and I have one gander. He is the aggressive one. He has gotten me twice and left good bruises and I catch him each time he goes after me just to remind him that I am bigger and smarter than he is, lol.
To be fair two of my females are cycling and laying eggs so that is one of the reasons he is aggressive. I think it is good that he is aggressive as he is some protection for the females that way. If a preditor comes around the will get him first and that gives my females time to get away.
I have a four foot chain link fence and my female geese fly when they are not laying eggs. They are too heavy to fly while laying. They stay inside the yard even when they fly. I clip my gander's wing so that he can't fly. When the wing is clipped it unbalances them while flying. He can use his wings and hop up about five feet off the ground. I don't pinion my geese I jsut clip about an inch of the tips of the feathers off which has to be done each time they molt and grow new feathers. I clip the male because I don't want him to fly at me when he is aggressive and the females won't leave the yard without him. I hope that this helps you with your decision on what type of goose to get. One thing for sure is the geese I have are loud enough that if a preditor comes around I know about it.

Oh yes I should have told you that if you stand your grounds and hiss at the geese they will stop chasing you. I stick out my arm and point at my male goose like my arm is a long neck and hiss and he gets the message loud and clear and backs off. You just need to train them right when they are little. No matter what kind of goose you get you should get them young or hatch them yourself and that way you get to know their personalities.
