I want to order from a hatchery in the spring, but which one?

I also ordered from MPC because of the sexing. However, one of my silkies that was supposed to be a hen is a roo. Not an exact science I'm told but he's very friendly and we love him. We lost the other silkie after one week-and a buff after 8 weeks. The other six are thriving and doing well.

However, I think MPC outsources to other hatcheries because the box they came in was from Meyer. I also see that meyer is starting a small chick order (as few as 3 like MPC). Granted the fee is higher $15-$25range for small order but well worth it if you want just hens.

If you decide on McMurray, get your order in now. When I tried to order in June of this year, there was a 4 month waiting list.

Thanks for the heads up on Meyer, have been trying to find a hatchery that will ship less than 25 chickies.

It's true that MPC is only a middleman. Also, read the fine print on their website. Their three chick minimum is only if you live in the largest of cities. It goes up from there the more rural the area you live in.

I personally wouldn't dream of ordering chicks right now. Think about it people. The mail is slowed down right now with Christmas close at hand. Do you want your chicks sitting and waiting in a mail facility somewhere because 10,000 fruitcakes that are never going to be eaten anyhow got to the PO before your chicks?

I ordered my babies from Mypetchicken.com
I was very happy with thier prices and the shipping.
I ordered 8 and they all came alive and healthy but one was a crossbeak, which they quickly refunded my money for
