I want to see your outdoor brooders!!!

SC Chickmom I Love the website you posted for for Kingbird farm. Very informative and well done videos! I sat here for a hour looking at them. There also another lady who had sheep and made cheese in New York. I think I would love her life, although I'm not sure I can work that hard. Anyway, thanks for sharing them.,

I am exactly the same. I love watching her videos. I would love to visit her farm. I like her idea of the box with the light underneath. I think that is a great idea for anyone that is trying to brood outside. I barely can keep the house clean and teach so ,like you, I don't think I could work that hard.

Thanks for the replies everyone. kbreak our designs are very similar, down to the two sawhorses I am going to sit mine on. My sides are all 1/4 in plywood though. I was thinking a draft guard all the way to the ground would be the way to go. I will drill about three or four 1 inch holes at each end for ventilation.

X-2 looks like She got her act together..enjoyed....cva34

My brooder has a wire floor and wire sides and I've never had that toe problem. II can see how that could happen, but would think it is pretty rare. Still, I don't doubt these things do happen. And once you see a problem, you need to handle it.
I keep my 3' x 5' brooder inside the coop,
How many chickens do you put in a 3x5 brooder? at what week do you take them out of the brooder?

Hi, I'm new here but was wondering if anyone has any kind of monitor set up to monitor the temp in the brooder from inside your house. That would be my concern with brooding outside. I don't know that I could sleep with worry that my heat source, which would be a light bulb, will fail. I'm getting some new chicks in a few days and I plan to start them in the house and move them out at about 4 weeks. Here in Ohio there is no telling what the weather will be like then.

Here is a (crummy) picture of my outdoor brooder. My DH built it out of scraps he had laying around. Its 4ft L x 2 1/2ft W x 2ft H. I don't use it much in the colder months, but as you can see from the pictures my cats think its pretty cozy. Its got some branches and rocks for perches and the general feeders, waterers and heat lamp. Its works very well and the price was just right....free.

For my incubator I'm using a smoker thermometer. It has a remote display that tells me the current temp inside. You can set an alarm to go off if the temp goes too high or too low.

Here is the one I have. http://www.amazon.com/Maverick-Indu...IU49/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327625123&sr=8-1
