I want to start a breeding program...need thoughts opinions and ideas

I am trying to convince my dad to start a breeding program but he says we have to many chickens! There are never TOO many chickens!

Okie I have had my eye on them for a while but I also wanted alot of other breeds, and eventually i decided to pick one and perfect that because trying to make quality breeding lines in five different breeds i know nothing about may get a little hectic. I most likely will not be purchasing them until next spring but i want to learn as much as I can about ths wonderful breed..

Do you know any good hatcheries ... we tried murray mcmurray but we were not impressed..

Thanks again
Stay far far away from hatcheries of any sort if you are looking to get quality stock. It would take years if not decades to try and fix all the problems they have with their stock (learned this the hard way also). Hatchery birds make great pets etc but they really don't compare to breeder birds.

I agree with the majority here in that you should go with a standard breed, larger eggs (for selling as eating eggs when times are slow), can process extra males.

Best way to convenes him is follow these steps
1) get a notebook and make book, with these things,
A: table of contents
B: page #
C: page titles
2) research for 3-6 months, get you breeders name, #, address, email, chick/chicken prices
3) have pen(s) plans( you'll need at least 2)
4) save up$$
5) get feed prices
6) get prices and the amount of EVERYTHING you'll need, ( feeds, waters, ect) will you use a incubator?
I'm doing this with my dog and horse stuff. Lol, I have 3 notebooks about this

Wow i actually started making a small one but never finished... I need to convince him it will be good... Idk any breeders around us and i dont want shipped eggs.. Im gonna do lots of researching tonight!
